"Rooting" an Android Device

Hope some of you folks have done this sort of thing before.

I have a Nextbook 7P tablet. Kinda sucks I know but should more than entertain the kid. Its got some crap version of Android which was released in the 1750's (like 2.3) and no access to the Google Play Store, which is pretty much f'ing useless.

Ive seen where I can "root" the device and install Ice Cream Sandwich plus the Google Play Store on it.

How do you do this exactly? Im not worried about messing it up as Im assuming even in a total pooch screw it could just be wiped out and done over.

Im sure someone will know something. I just couldnt wrap my mind around Apple's proprietary stuff, the fact you cant open an iPhone to reset the battery, and the whole being fragile in the hands of a pre-teen. Apple hasnt made a device yet to survive my daughter.

I did root my phone. I thought about trying to put Ice Cream Sandwich on it, but it just seems to be akin to polishing a turd.

Man I need to get my kids wrecked phone fixed...

When you root something, it is possible to brick it. That makes it impossible to do anything with it, including wipe it out and start over. Just a word of caution.

I've had my android phone for 2yrs & now its getting out of date because I can't download some apps now!

I have rooted and installed custom Roms on both phones and tablets. There is a big learning curve and takes a lot of trial and error. You can "brick" your device if you don't follow the directions exactly.

If you still want to go through with it, the experts on this are the guys at xda-developers.com. Here is a link to a thread about what I think is your device.

Good luck, but it isn't easy and does have risk.

Thanks for the intel guys. I knew the risk about bricking the damn things, and Id found the XDA thread and figured it was beyond my pay grade so to speak.

Thinking the safest bet is finding someone around here who knows what they are doing and getting it over with, especially since its going to take an operating system "flash" after the root.
