The table above proves that you must have talent in order to win championships. You don't have to be at the top of the list, but you need to be in the top 15-20 on a consistent basis in order to compete for a championship.

As I said yesterday, the sky is not falling... We have talent currently on campus which means we have a chance to be successful with good coaching. Good coaching + talent leads to wins, which leads to recruiting more talent on campus. This gives you a chance at a championship and really thats all you can ask for.

TLDR -- Getting good talent on campus is important and we have good talent on campus. The sky is not falling unless you are a fan of the Tennessee Vols...

I was thinking the same thing. Another column to add to that chart is Coaches Salary. I think the teams that bring in the most talent also have the better coaches. As we have seen as the coaching starts to slip so does the recruiting.

I think the chart dispels notions about rankings in terms of fans "loosing it" over a class that is not in the top 5 or so. The ranking can swing from top 5 to around 15 (like we are doing now). Alabama has been on a helluva run due to their timely success.

It may be that class ranking follows success, then yields more success. But the product has to end up on the field, has to be realized.

I'd like to point out the obvious...for the first time in 16 years we have COACHING. Teams like KSU and OSU have given us (and everyone else fits) over the years because of terrific coaching. Can you imagine what Snyder would do with our current recruiting class???

So, while it is disappointing to lose out on the Alakas and Harveys of this (imperfect) world, I think we're going to be a far better team than we were, even when we played in the NC game (2009).

(1) Case Mccoy played lights out against OU.

(2) Trevor Knight played lights out against Bama.

The rankings above suggest that OU, Texas & Bama all have good to elite talent on campus. QB Play, Coaching, Turnovers, etc. can and will decide most games unless the talent is vastly different.

A bad coach can screw up good talent.

A great coach can only get so much out of mediocre talent.

Either way you have to have talent first. Talent gets you in the top 10. Coaching gets you to number 1 unless of course you have VY or Cam then just get out of the way.

And this is why Mack Brown lost his job. He averaged 11.5 wins/year (overachieved) from 2004 to 2009 but then only averaged 7.5 wins/year (underachieved) from 2010 to 2013. It averages out nicely to 9.9 wins/year, but it doesn't get the job done at the end of the day.

The top 11 schools sorted by average rivals rankings occupy 32 of the 50 top 5 spots (64%)

9/11 of these schools have more than 1 top 5 finish. Only Michigan (0) and FSU (1) do not.

Only 4 other schools have more than 1 Top 5 finish (ie good coaching) -- Oregon (3) Missouri (2) Utah (2) Boise (2)

Nine other schools had 1 top 5 finish.

In 2009 where Saban had more talent (though not dramatically) Mack likely wins if Colt doesn't go down . .
