At the risk of having virtual eggs thrown at me, I think it's time to be realistic regarding a HC search. I often complain about the sense of entitlement players have within the program, but I have been guilty of that over the last couple of weeks when thinking of who the next HC at UT will be. After careful thought, I have eliminated the following:

> HC of a Top 15 college program

I want a coach who is hungry and wants to prove himself to the college football world. I'm not sure a proven college HC doesn't view himself as entitled when offered 10 million/year. I think it's the opposite of who I would like to fill the vacant HC role.

> NFL HC

I know Saban excelled with the move, but I think most NFL HC's will view this as a step down from a coaching standpoint despite the huge salary. I think trying to convince a 17 yo to attend your school will leave most wishing they were back in the league.

I just don't think any coach (Briles the possible exclusion) that fits into one of the two categories would actually take the UT job. I want a coach somewhat off the radar who can't wait to show the country what he could do with the resources UT has to offer. My favorites, Franklin of Vandy or Strong of Louisville. Just how I feel after a draining last couple of weeks.

I think Saban has proven to everybody that, if you got the chops, you can garner ALL the respect and ALL the bennies of coaching in the NFL at a place like Bama or Texas.

I totally agree. All this Baylor love is in large part due to the conference being down.

...this may be true mcphaul, but everyone knows that we are truly not up to "texas" standards. at some point the "status quo" shall become history. especially, in lieu of a new coaching administration / philosophy...

In addition I think this is more the result of the stagnation in the Texas program, even though BU has clearly greatly improved.

Briles is turning BU into a solid D1 program and he deserves praise for what he has done.

However, bu is not the problem at Texas, Mack has been the problem along with DeLoss, it may take a few years but we have the opportunity and the assets to be a major player in college football in the near future.

You know what gets me? OuSuxx was down this yr and was called "horrible" on several occasions yet they are playing in a BCS bowl and is again knocking on the door of being top 10 during a " down " year. Anyone that is a Mack apologist just has to look at them to realize how underachieving the Mack years have been. We need a fighter as our next HC, not a diplomat

Briles is too old. Other coaches include Jim Mora, Andersen, Shaw, Strong, Gus, Fisher, and the list goes on.

Okay, the Eagles are a formidable opponent in the NFC East. Does that make them a legitimate threat to win the Super Bowl? No, it doesn't and the same scenario plays true for Baylor.

The reason everyone is on this site is b/c of future hope. Hope that the Horns become title contenders in the future and that doesn't mean conference champions. I look on the side of the OU transport vans every year at the Cotton Bowl and see all of these conference championships. WHO CARES? Coaches who want a bonus or fans who can point to it to win an argument?

The only thing that matters is hoisting a crystal ball at the end of the season and the process of getting to that point. A conference championship simply shows that a program is headed in the right definition, but that is it. What Baylor did this season, YAWN!

Nice BCS bowl game on the heels of getting killed in Stillwater, where the team you blew out at home, OU, went and won. DEFINITION: AVERAGE!!!

If all this fanbase wants is conference championships, then we can stop the coaching speculation right now, b/c it doesn't matter.

Sorry McPhaul, nothing personal, it's just this Baylor talk that draws me offsides. Briles is nothing more than this years Gary Patterson flavor of the month!

I've got no problem being realistic. People are so "hot in the ass" for the huge splash hire. I want the right man, not the right name.

Being realistic goes both ways. What evidence do you have that Baylor will disappear into the mist or that we will miraculously resurrect ourselves into a top 5 team nationally next year just because we hire a new coach?

UT certainly will not be a top 5 team next year or in 2015. The next HC will need to implement a culture change and will need time to increase the depth of talent on the roster.

As for Baylor, not real sure outside the state of Texas the country actually takes them seriously, and they shouldn't until they beat a team which is considered elite. Until then, BU is nothing more than a team competing for a state championship.

Saban or no saban involvement last week (many different answers out there. Not everyone even agrees saban was ever coming here. Many say no ) you really think powers is that involved day to day in the athletic program and wants UT football to be down? Come on. Mack Brown is now gone. It's time for optimism for what the future may bring given for the first time in 16 years Texas will have a new head coach and have out deloss dodds out to pasture. Not extreme pessimism with some notion UT is not going anywhere with these changes. At least see who is hired

And Steve Patterson is now running the show. This will be his hire and all on him. I think in time he will prove to be an outstanding AD hire IMO. Notice how there is little to no leaking of info about who he is after right now? In time I think you will see some pretty massive change in bellmont as well esp in size. Way too many employees. Just my opinion but I'm excited for the future and interested to see how it turns out. It's been well over a decade since we've gone through this

I want the right coach for sure - and that may be a big spash or not. But not all big splash hires do so poorly at their next stop.
