Quick baseball note

Guys & gals,

I just finished reading several of the threads over across the way at a couple of other sites.

I have said it before this season, but want to say it again. Thank you.

Thank you for being so level headed when it came to discussing baseball this season.

Thank you for not bashing the players and coaches at the first sign of adversity. (There are folks from the team that read this site and it is very much appreciated.)

Thank you for taking time to understand the game, and asking if you didn't know something, without having to worry about being flamed.

Thank you for having legitimate conversations, even when things were not going the way that we wanted them to go with this team during the season.

Thank you for sticking through this exciting ride with those of us here at Horn Sports.

Thank you for not cliff jumping at every bump in the road.

Thank you for the support when I couldn't make it for PBP

Thank you for changing your hat, shirt, chair, cocktail, beer cup or shoes, whenever the karma called for it.

Thank you for not attacking other posters on HS for differing opinions on coaching, strategies or lineups.

Thank you for keeping it light hearted, because there were certainly times when it could have gotten ugly.

I don't think y'all know how much better all of the above makes this place. So thank you.

I have been on the Longhorn message boards going back to the old Austin360.com & TheUniversity.com days. The community here is taking shape nicely, and those of you that participate on here make the experience enjoyable, akin to the "old days." Even when we disagree on topics, the discussion doesn't turn into a bitch fest. There are a LOT of "fans" out there that feel the need to crap on this team and the coaching staff at every single turn. Those "fans" are not here, and quite frankly, I am glad. I don't need a place that is always full of sunshine, (hell, I live in the PacNW,) but I do find productive banter refreshing as opposed to what goes on elsewhere.

Thank you all. The future of Longhorn sports is very bright, as is the future of this website. Enjoy the ride.

Have a good rest of your weekend and Hook Em!
you do a great job, joey.

I'm with you Capn Hook if Jeff didn't miss the opener we don't go in the losers bracket. Boo this sunshine pumper joeywa. Boo him! ;)

Thanks again Jeff for spearheading a great year.
I thought we'd already established that this was all Slim's fault.

Here is story on Blake Wellmann

Brenham, Texas, quite obviously. It's a town I've had the privilege to live in so I've seen the fervor for baseball, and softball, firsthand. In recent years Brenham football has ascended to statewide prominence, but in Brenham, baseball is the constant.
You more seasoned readers will recall Cecil Cooper. You semi-seasoned readers might remember Jon Peters from Sports Illustrated 'SUPERKID' fame and his 51 consecutive high school wins. Dustin Majewksi should certainly be a fondly remembered name after becoming an All-American and national champion on the 2003 Longhorn squad.

Brenham Cub pitcher, Blake Wellmann (class of 2015), hopes to continue the town's rich tradition, and he plans to do it in Austin after recently committing. I caught up with tall right hander to talk about baseball, but I was secretly thinking about chicken fried steak at Country Inn II.

Inside Texas: Congratulations on the big news. The question people want to know about a pitcher is how hard they throw, but from researching you a bit it appears you're not a power pitcher. What kind of pitcher are you?

Blake Wellmann: My best fastball is 90 but I really have four pitches; fastball, curve, change-up, and a hard slider. The hard-slider's my strike-out pitch.

IT: I watched Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio enough to know how effective a hard slider is for a strikeout pitch. So, you picked Texas. What was the sales pitch? What stood out to you about the opportunity?

BW: Coach Skip (Johnson) said he wasn't concerned about velocity. He wanted a guy who could throw strikes and locate his pitches. I get a lot of groundball outs. He liked that as well. To me it seemed like a perfect fit.

IT: I'd have to agree, that does sound like a good fit. What were your stats on the year?

BW: I went 9-0 through district and the playoffs with a 1.31 ERA. I struck out 86 in 65 innings pitched (he had to look that up).

IT: How did you guys end up this season?

BW: We made it the regional finals where we lost to George Ranch.

IT: I don't follow baseball too much, but I know they have a stud but I can't remember his name.

BW: Stone Garrett.

IT: That's it. How'd you fare against him?

BW: He went 0-3 with two ground outs and a strikeout.

IT: Nice. Where'd he end up?

BW: The Marlins drafted him in the 8th round and he signed so he's in the minors.

IT: Well it has to feel good to do that well against a minor leaguer. Who else was recruiting you hard?

BW: It came down to UT, TCU, Rice and Texas State.

IT: And how does this work? Are you on full scholarship or partial?

BW: Everything is scholarship except for housing.

IT: Is Texas recruiting any of your teammates?

BW: Not at Brenham but I also play for College Station 12 and they have a commitment from Beau Ridgeway from College Park (The Woodlands). He's really good.

IT: Well this was all great to hear. I can't wait to see you take the mound. Thanks for your time.

BW: Thank you and I appreciate it.
