I'm a member of a FB group called "Texas HS Memories" which features great HS teams of the past.

This week, someone posted a thread asking opinions on who was the best coach between Scott Surratt at Carthage and Jeff Traylor who is coaching on the college level.

I answered with Traylor, because he advanced and was sought out by college football. Then some yehoo chimes in that Texas tried to get Scott Surratt to join the Texas staff at some point. Having monitored Texas football closely for the past three decades, I couldn't recall a single time where I had heard that.

Besides, you don't turn down Texas to stay at Carthage. Ever. IMO.

Anyone hear that in the past several years?

If memory serves, Bobby and Gerry flirted with the idea of Surratt coaching at Texas, then had him on as a guest on Coffee & Football. That's the best I can come up with.

If I'm not mistaken at the time when Strong was the head coach. He went to Gilmer to recruit the Boys Brothers. I had a funny feeling they weren't the only ones Strong had recruited at the time. Texas was getting manhandled on the East Texas recruiting pipeline for awhile so they needed a coach that had strong ties and relationships with the kids in East Texas. Honestly, Surratt would have been a good choice but I couldn't take anything away from Traylor due to the way he turned the Gilmer program around into a powerhouse

Baylor ended up hiring him. He came to Texas after that. Think he's coaching UTSA right now.

GJ Kinne from Gilmer is the hc at Texas State.

Rumor was Bob McQueen, ex-Temple HS coach, turned downed SMU to stay at Temple back in the 70's/80's. McQueen had it made at Temple, a legend that always produced good teams and players. It was said his house and cars were given to him and who knows what other perks. You have to count in the fact that maybe both him and his wife enjoyed living there and being the big fish in a small pond. So based on that, I know it's rare but I can see a coach staying at the HS level vs going to college just to get fired. Remember Todd Dodge?

I heard the same thing about Bob McQueen.
