QB battle

Godz....you very well know that I absolutely respect your football knowledge so dont get too down on me.

I am very excited to see what Buschele brings to the table and cant wait to see him, but I do have one concern which you can aliviate for me. In this spread offense the wideouts are spread sideline to sideline. I would expect that during the course of the game many opportunities will arise for quick slant passes to the flat. These throws are what separates NFL talent from just good college QB's but require a strong arm to avoid interceptions. Does Shane have that strong an arm?

Shane is the typical elite freshman QB. Makes a great throw then a terrible throw. Maturity should resolve the problem. Problem is we need him now. I must admit from just a few clips posted Shane scares me sometimes. On the other hand Swoopes scares me most of the time. My source of optimism is Shane's competitiveness. No one wants to perform poorly but Shane seems to despise it. It could be bumpy at first but he should do well..... I hope

Thanks, OH2.

From HS highlights, the spring game, practice vidz, and published reports, yes, Shane can make those throws on a very consistent basis. The key is that, while he doesn't have a Swoopes-like Howitzer, his advantages are timing and placement.

Will he throw picks in his true-frosh year? Undoubtedly. But, he's a learner who will progress rather rapidly, IMHO.

I have no doubts about Shane's future. I am just questioning how he will do in the present. Well...me and everyone else. I am not hoping for either QB. I am hoping for wins. I dont care if Trey Holtz trots out first....just win!

So we start Swoopes, he struggles the first possession and then pull him. By the time our O hits the field again, we could potentially be down by 2 scores. Also, what kind of signal does that send to Swoopes?

Call it a hunch but if Strong starts Swoopes, he doesn't do well and we lose, some big cigars are going to be very unhappy. My .02 cents worth.
Buchele can struggle in his first possession. What if Buchele throws a Pick 6 in his first series?

It's one game that is 95% likely going to be a loss. Both will play but Swoopes will start. Why destroy the true freshman's confidence on the first series? Buchele will be in by the 2nd quarter and if he does well enough but they still are losing, they will keep him in. If not, move back to Swoopes.

It's one game, if the "big cigars" get so worked up over 1 game, they need more patience IYAM.

Do you really think that this young man's confidence can be destroyed in one series?

Following the spring game it was reported that Boo had Mothras in his stomach before the game, so he talked to Malik who told him, "No problem; just play your game," (or something similar).

Did anyone watching his performance notice and note that Shane was nervous? Were there any reports saying, "It's understandable that a 3½ month old freshman would have the jitters at first, but once Buechele settled down, he played pretty well."? The answer, of course, is "No."

All the reports from spring through summer have noted how competitive, determined, and successful Boo is... at anything! The coaches have even said that whatever (sport/game) he plays, he excels.

I Like the idea of Buechele coming into the game after the defense has had to tackle our 750 lb. backfield and most of time without no huddle rest time. Also, we some of the speed we can put on the field.

What was your favorite elite throw of Shane's freshman year and his greatest example of competitiveness?
Hopefully he's the next Colt. But to date, his biggest accomplishments are 1) he had a nice half of a spring game and 2) he's not Swoopes.

The coaches are just playing a joke on us. Swoopes will take the first snap out of the 18 wheeler package. Then on second and 6 Shane comes in and throw a 60 yard touchdown to Burt and leads us to a 41-38 victory, and a 11-1 record to get us into the playoff.

Okay so I pulled that number out of my you know where, but let's be honest here.

Notre Dame is the better team. They know this is an important game for them. They also have a national spotlight to showcase why they should potentially be a playoff team. Most of their defense is juniors and seniors. They have 2 great QBs and weapons all over the field with an established system and coaches.

Texas has hope with some young talent that may become elite at some point and they are trying to become bowl eligible.

These two teams are on two different trajectories. Charlie Strong just wants the team to compete and give them a chance to win. Notre Dame wants to assert themselves on one of the few, if not only, night(s) they will have all to themselves to showcase their team for the playoffs. Notre Dame will be going all out, Texas will try to manage the game to not make it a blowout so Charlie can point to progress.

Notre Dame has a laughable schedule. They get a rebuilding Michigan State and Miami team at home. They play only 4 true road games and after Texas. The toughest game is likely Stanford or at USC (depending on if that mess is fixed). They need a breakout performance in Week 1 to silence the critics for the inevitable bad loss they will suffer in the middle of the season. Why not have it on the road at Texas?

I'd actually started to laugh when I read this and then realized that you're serious...

What, if anything, are you basing your "analysis" on?  Can you point to anything that you've seen in practice, interviews with coaches or players that suggests that Coach Strong just wants the team to compete on 09/04?  Or...that, the coaching staff's game plan for ND is to avoid a blowout instead of going out to win the game?  Do you honestly believe that any of the players or anyone on the coaching staff is going to see avoiding a blowout as progress or that that would give them anything to build on going forward?

I'd love to be a fly on the wall when he talks to Perrin and the BMDs about the game...

"Just wanted to give y'all a heads up about the game tonight...  We're definitely planning on doing our best to be competitive against ND but the coaching staff and I think that what we really want to do is to make sure that we don't go out and get our asses handed to us.  We're not really expecting to win tonight, this is ND after all; no, our goal is to have a chance to win and to make sure that we only lose by a little.  If we can manage to do those two things then I think that that shows forward progress...that something you can hang your hat on!!"

over on spurstalk there's a lively discussion regarding qb development, and the local tech sap is doing his best to warp reality, as usual.

what struck me was the comments that some there think briles and, therefore, gilbert are largely products of the mike leach/hal mumme tree.  my impression has always been that there was some leach influence on briles, but that briles cut his teeth with bill yoeman.  hence the impetus to run the ball first.  i don't think mike leach has ever considered that his primary role is that of developing a run game, except as a complement to his passing game.

was denken sie, bitte, por favor?

It seems like every year in the past few years, we have a great freshman QB who better start over the aging, has been starter we have from the previous year. When was the last time we didn't have this debate?

I don't care who starts. Both will play, and maybe a 3rd QB. At the end of the season, the best QB will be starting.

While the internet boards have sure been lively leading up to the game because of the QB situation, just think what it's going to be like once the game has actually been played. No matter how it plays out.

Either QB could exceed expectations or they could fall short of expectations or they could be somewhere in the middle. But it will definitely be fun to read all about it.

But can you imagine what all the boards would be like if Swoopes were to play well. Complete and total hilarity would ensue.

Not beyond the realm of possibility.
A lot of people believe it is totally beyond the realm of possibility for Swoopes to play good.

I am not one of those people. But since I can't predict the future, I really don't know how either QB will play.
