Productive Heard Playing Time Next Year

"In the end, to be honest with you he wasn't putting the work out there yet, because he was still learning," said Watson. "It would make us look like what we say is not what we mean or what we deliver. He's gotten better as a result of it."
Interesting statement.  When I first read this it sounded like a disciplinary thing or rather "you are not going to play til you start doing the things you are told to do".    Lighting that fire under the frosh.

Watson said similar things about Swoopes after his 3 game subpar performance.  He needs to improve yaddi yadda

This is the same thing I was conveying in the "Is Swoopes Improving" thread. Different kids have the light turn on at different times and for some never.

I know in this time where we see a few QBs seemingly turn it on immediately, it is hard to get over the excitement. However that is not the norm. Heard will have is chance, as will Gentry. It does not mean they will take over the #1 spot immediately and it should not necessarily be a concern if they don't.

Yea.  I would like to see a decent JUCO QB come in with some college experience.

I just hope Swoopes and the offense can move the ball Thursday.  I trust our defense vs the TCU offense.  It may come down to whether or not we can move the ball in the second half or not.  Texas Offense is second to last in the FBS for points scored in the 3rd Quarter.  20 points all year i think.  The lowest scored in the FBS is 13.  Just a comparison of how bad that is Baylor has scored 150+ in the 1st quarter.

Let's say, hypothetically, that Ash isn't ready to go against UNT.

May as well prepare Heard to be the back-up by making sure he gets no less than 25% of the snaps in OOC games.  What Mack did last year with Swoopes was ridiculous.  We had no plan whatsoever for developing him.
What Mack and his staff did to this program the last few years is a crime.

Adding a Juco would be icing on the cake. I have heard that they are looking to try and do just that. I am happy to see such a change from this staff vs the last one. QB is far to critical to not have competition.

This way no matter if it is Swoopes, Heard, Gentry, or someone completely off the radar, you know that the staff is putting who they truly see is the best on the field based on true competition.

I do not agree with Darrell on that, but I'm just a landscaper so what do I know?
please mark, don't start trotting out the humble pie to the dinner table... or so to speak.  you are a football king!  i'd trust your insight upon anyone!  i have the utmost / foremost confidence in jerrod... he's a baller!

It is really helpful to have 3 quarterbacks ready to play, with one red shirting. Just my thought. We see how only having one or two can be trouble.

IF there is a JUCO quarterback out there that would help, then I would go get him. But we should not go get one just to have another warm body.

Having QB depth is important if you want the QB to run.

Let's just say the feedback I've heard on Heard is much more optimistic than what Darrell is saying.

Darrell has been right on things moreso than I have so it's tough for me to doubt him.

What I was told is the that light has finally turned on for Heard and that he is expected to give Swoopes a real run for his money this spring.

VY and Colt both red-shirted and yet most Texas fans think Heard isn't any good because he's doing the same?

I'm with the landscaper, I think Heard is the real deal. I also think he will be our starter next year. Maybe not by the first game but by the end of the year.

Darrell specifically said "at this time." He is right. But Watson was projecting what he thought he would see this spring out of Heard. There's a lot of snaps to be had between now and next season.

I hope Heard's light has indeed turned on. Competition helps them all get better.
But he also said "next year" in the very first sentence. That is a definitive statement about what he thinks about Heard's potential to be the better quarterback is next year, not just "at this time".
