Pick one coach and tell us why!

I see a ton of different opinions on the board about who should be the next head ball coach for UT. I am curious as to why each of you feel the way you do about said head coach. So I would ask that you pick just 1 coach if you could have any one out there, and sell the rest of us on why you chose that person. I do ask that people be respectful of other's choices even if they are a reach. This is just to see where people would go with their one pick.

My pick:

John Harbaugh.

Why I chose him:

There are no doubt a ton of quality coaches out there. Some even have a more proven college track record. This was a tough choice for me because I really do like coach Nick Saban. I ended up choosing CJH (Coach John Harbaugh) for a few specific reasons.

1. He is young.

This is a good thing to me for a few reasons. First, he wont be looking to retire anytime soon. With some success here, I think he would actually pass DKR's record and still be young enough to continue coaching well past it. I also believe his youth helps him with recruiting, etc. Being able to relate to the kids and sell the fact that you will be around for a lot of years to come is a selling point to me.

2. He is a proven winner.

He has won at the highest level of the game and done so with class. His players love him (not always a common theme in the NFL) and will do anything to win for this man. He keeps a calm demeanor on the sidelines, but is fiery when necessary. I think he would be able to motivate the kids to play their butts off and never quit. I also think he would kill it on the recruiting trail. Showing off that super bowl ring in parents living rooms and telling them he knows how to get his players ready for the league is a huge selling point in my opinion.

3. He comes from a football family.

Lets not overlook this big point. This isn't some guy that played ball growing up and became a coach just because its a cool job that pays well. He comes from a football family of players and coaches. He knows how the game works and has coached in both college and the pro's. Having a football pedigree in his blood is not something I take for granted and his family knew/knows how to win. Success runs deep in their family bloodlines and I think this is the exact kind of winner we need running the program of our beloved University.

For these reasons and a few others that I chose not to bore everyone with, I would hire CJH over Nick Saban and the rest. Saban is a true winner, but I fear he coaches a few years and retires. No doubt he wins, and wins a lot, but I would trade him for a coach that will win for many years to come.

Briles

Texas high school experience

Innovator

Turned around two programs

Developer of QB's

This is tough...

I like John Harbaugh, but I also like Briles.

But if I went after someone, it's Shaw. Guy is a great coach and smart.

Briles

All he does is win with 2 & 3 stars, he will own it with 4 & 5 stars, he's a Texan, he's an offensive innovator & his QB's are always very good, college football is about offense nowadays, Art is the answer, he's also realistic unlike Saban

Reading all the "sources" around the Internet boards about Saban is quite amusing, Nick hasn't been nor will be interested in this job, he allowed those rumors to get more money on his contract, he isn't talking with anyone & he isn't leaving Alabama, that's ridiculous

Saban: because my wife and I both want Saban.....keeping all in the family.

John H concerns me bc he has no college experience. That a is huge issue for me. NFL and college are very different on and off the field, IMO.

And the argument that he can ask his brother or dad isnt a good one, then hire the brother or dad. John could succeed sure but he is the riskiest pick for the few names considered.

If we can't get Saban, then I'd go with Briles. I think he offers the fastest and smoothest transition, knows Texas high schools well, and puts fear into opposing coaches if he were at Texas

Honestly, I think any from a list of Saban, Fisher, Harbaugh, and Gruden would do really well here. If not those guys, I'd be fine with Malzahn and Briles as well as two that no one talks about (Anderson and Gundy). I just want the next guy to be someone who can coach x's and o's at a decent level (because even when you delegate, you need to know what a great coordinator looks like) and someone who will develop talent (hire a great s&c coach and then make sure you hire good staff and give them leeway to coach).

I think winning and the Texas brand makes the recruiting aspect a little less important.

While I'm not happy with how the Mack era ended, I think his tenure is what put UT in the position to be a much more valuable job then when he arrived. When Mack arrived, UT needed a dynamic recruiter and politician who could bring the various factions together and mobilize fundraising to make us such a valuable brand.

Now, with the brand where it is and the amount of money coming in, we need someone who truly can coach and develop talent to consistently compete with the upper echelon of college football.

Ah but he does have college experience. Over ten years of it. Just not as a HC.

My pick was Mark Dantonio.

Great defensive coach that develops lightly recruited players into studs. He could hire a good offensive coordinator but I think the offense in the Rose Bowl is doing well.

Also he will be cheap.
