OT: If you were traveling by yourself

Must. Be. Effing. Nice.

5 years ago I'd have gone to the party-est place. Now I'd go to the chill-est. I'm a foodie though and if the drop off was too big I'd endure the crowds.
I'm going to Bangkok for the food. So I suppose chillest island makes sense then.

I'm going to Thailand but can't decide which island for my beach getaway.
A. Koh Samui

B. Koh Lipe
...didn't i tell you that you seem to following in my footstep around the globe...

thailand huh? well, i once stayed at the "royal phuket yacht club hotel" nai harn, phuket, thailand. go ahead look it up... simply fabulous.

I have a good friend who's daughter is on a Fulbright Scholarship right now in Thailand and she knows all the right places. I also have a niece who lives permanently in Singapore and they travel extensively to all those spots, including a lot in places not in Thailand (Sri Lanka, Bali, Vietnam) which would be close by.

I could get you in touch with them if you like.

I've never traveled alone in Asia but have in Europe. It was by accident as I was originally there with two other guys, but the gf of one of them came over and so they took off, and then the other guy had to leave due to a family emergency back home. So there I was with 3 weeks left and a rail pass.

It worked out well for me though. Here is what I realized -- when you are in a group, you tend to stick with them for all your activities. You already have everything you need in terms of interaction and companionship. However, when you are alone, you will instantly become more open to meeting other folks along the way. This is what happened to me. I quickly made friends out of some Aussies (always tons of them out there), Irish, an Albanian (dude saved me long night in Munich) and even a Yugoslavian (as it it was then). It was a great experience. And I would not have made so many new friends had those 2 other guys stayed with me.

One of the Aussies was a female and we sort of stayed in touch. Met her on the beach in Cannes. (my version of "Before Sunrise").

I don't want to get all paternal on you, but female traveling alone may be a slightly different animal.

Have fun! My fiance and I went on a month long trip to Taiwan, Korea and Cambodia last year. I hadn't been to Taiwan in years and the food scene is amazing in Taipei. If you climb, there's an great set of sea cliffs east of Taipei that people are starting to check out.

I really enjoyed snorkeling in Thailand so I'd pick the spot with the best water. I'd lean towards Koh Lipe because the development is only going to get worse in the future so I'd try to go there while it's still being developed. There's some amazing snorkeling in Koh Samui but you have to get away from the jet skis.

Thanks! I heard Koh Lipe is timing consuming to get to. The boat ride to the island is at least another 2 hours depending where you depart. I have serious motion sickness especially on boats so that doesn't sound very fun. Perhaps I can get the patch.

How did you make it to Koh Phi Phi? We took the slow boat from Phuket and it felt like an eternity. Was there a fast ferry?

I barely survived going to Koh Phi Phi. We stayed at the Phi Phi Island Beach Resort and they had their own car service to take us from airport to their marina and their speed boat to shuttle us to the island from Phuket. Over an hour boat ride.

Koh Samet is easy to get to from Bangkok. My son went there and loved it. It is only a 20 minute ferry ride I think.
