No more Crossfire means subscription cancellation

I just received a call from a customer of mine who has been with me for several years. Great guy, big time Longhorn. Attends all home and away games.

I would not post this if he had not requested that I do as I've tried to stay out of this matter. But he came to HS because I recommended he (and many others) did. He stayed at HS because of McPhaul and Crossfire. He left when it stopped appearing although he tells me he comes back to read the landscape thread (right, ha ha).

He bought a year membership but tells me he likely won't come back much now. He said that if HS intends to be a news and community site only, the news side of that would likely not compare to what others are already doing. Loves the community but that in itself isn't enough to stay.

I think a lot of folks "leaving" because of McPhaul are missing a larger picture. Darrell's column was once per week. Most of these folks were/are active on this board more often than that single column, in other threads/discussions.

While I understand the frustrations of there not being a Crossfire, (I do because I made my case for it to remain a part of this site,) and I understand someone not wanting to be a pay member for that reason, I think these folks need to understand that upwards of 90+% of the content here is free. There is no charge.

If you have an issue with the "treatment of Darrell," as in ATX's case, then reach out to Aaron and discuss it one-on-one with him. If your problem is the lack of Crossfire, review what your activity has been on this board when Crossfire was here, and see if it's worth sticking around as a free member.

People really do take this internet message board stuff way too seriously. Blows my mind.

The guy's activity was zero as far as posting. He's not much for words but enjoyed Crossfire.

I don't think it's a matter of taking something too seriously. If you like something and get in the habit of getting it (once a week or not), then don't get it - you'll speak out. Especially if you dropped in for a year's membership because of that feature.

This is a marketplace where consumers have lots of choices. You mention 90% of the content being free - that's obviously not an issue for a guy who buys a year and doesn't want a refund and will go elsewhere to get what he likes. It's no different that going down an isle in a grocery store.

I don't have any issues with anything as I'm a sponsor and make my decisions based on a larger picture. So I am patient in that sense. But I was asked to convey those thoughts and know the guy well enough to say he's just about anything but serious about message boards.

If I ever lose his business, he'll probably let me know why. Some people are kind enough to do that, or at least I find it helpful when that happens.

Oh, the comment about serious was more "in general" and not directed at one in particular, certainly not you.

I'm sure if folks have questions, a call or email to Aaron will be answered. I don't think the fact that he hasn't offered up a ton of detail on the board to be critiqued is much of a surprise.

Neither has Darrell offered up any public response on this topic. I feel that speaks positively to both of their characters.

I'll share my thoughts, mostly because I don't want the folks contemplating leaving to think that their voices aren't being heard.

Insider content was higher in the last 10 days than it has been in months. It's not called Crossfire, but the staff has posted twice and two different members (with extremely solid sources) have posted multiple times. Inside info is packaged differently, but it's here and it's been downright frequent lately.

I'm at a loss for folks that don't think there's much content being produced. HornSports has previewed 10 of 12 opponents (#11 will run tonight); we're currently on Part III of a thorough preview of the team; there's been live threads and recap stories for every press conference in the last 2 weeks (at least 5 events); regular features like Chalk Talk & the Q&A; and special features on Texas Tight Ends and one on Dylan Haines. Like the inside info, most of that is within the last 2 weeks.

True that not all of that content has been Premium-only. We've used some of it to advertise the site and pull in new members, so more has been free lately.

I'm happy to talk about how stories and inside info are presented on the message board. The contributors work extremely hard to produce stories and if there are ways to help everyone enjoy and discuss them, I'm all for it.

I also welcome any critiques of format, readability, etc. If there is something that is keeping you from consuming what is being produced, then we need to hear about it.

Honestly, if you compare August 2014's content with any prior month, it compares favorably.

I will start a new post that contains our proposed Game Week content schedule. I'd love to get some feedback on it.
