New DC?

What makes everyone certain that, providing Strong is retained, that we hire a new DC?  Maybe I'm "high" off the performance against ISU (I know, it is JUST ISU). But as the season winds down and the defense continues to improve (Lord willing), why wouldn't Strong just continue to call the plays on defense ala GP at TCU? Now, after you nice people shred that comment, if a new dc is hired, who's the "hot guy" that we should bring in?  Who's available?

If the defense improves under Strong, I think he continues to call the plays.  You move Brian Jean Marie up to the DC spot, and bring in Hurt.  Oh and go get a good DB coach.  JMHO

Charlie is the head coach by job description but he has been the DC all along regardless of the title formerly bestowed upon Bedford. That is simply my opinion and you are free to pick it apart if you like.

My point is that I do not think he is a great DC. However, I believe he has a program that young men (and maybe more important, their parents) want to be a part of. Correct me if I am wrong but I am not aware of Charlie promising not to recruit a position the following year to entice a recruit. You cannot replace Charlie's integrity. People either have that or they don't.

So, you hire or promote a new DC and allow Charlie to captain the ship.

I agree with Embrey as I feel Charlie has been Coaching the Defense and that if Charlie does stay then you have to bring in a DC.  I just don't have the knowledge of who the current hot prospect or who is the respected legend that might be available, What I do want is LB's that are super fast with big fellows up front that control the line and can collapes the pocket.  Is that to much to ask!!!  LOL   If your going to wish heck make a good one right!

There are to many responsibilities as coach at UT to also be a DC. If CS survives then he needs to bring in one of the top young DC's in the country. Urban Meyer is an offensive guy, however his best offense at Ohio State was when Tom Herman was the OC.

I see this as the same problem that we had with Shawn Watson, but on the other side of the ball.

Charlie gained fame as a DC in the SEC, SEC, SEC. The spread offenses in the Big 12 are a different breed of cat to defend against. IMHO, we need a DC who has a good record defending the spread (if one exists).

I'm not so sure Strong has been coaching the defense this entire time.  No doubt he has had input perhaps on certain play call at certain moments during games but I think the defense was left primarily to Bedford.  I say that based on the fact that at 1 point this past Saturday 5 true freshmen were on the field for the defense.  Under Bedford not way that happens.

Depending on what the secondary looks like the rest of the year, I'd be OK keeping Vance as the secondary coach, getting rid of Jennings (think this happens regardless) and bringing in a DC with experience against the spread.

I do not disagree but will remind you that there is another major factor: Charlie is now coaching with his job on the line. If he has proven anything in his tenure at Texas it is that he is loyal to a fault. We would all love a friend like that but if that friend values those connections and their loyalty above having the best person in place, we see what the result is.

The best coaches, based on recent results, are Saban and Meyer. One big difference between Texas' program and theirs is that Saban and Meyer are going to lose their OCs and DCs every few years to head coaching jobs, yet the continuity of high quality performance remains. My point is that we should not be coveting this 'hot' coordinator or that one but that Texas should establish a program that allows their coordinators to develop and leave and then replaces them successfully. If you have that in place the ambitious and talented coordinators will flock to Texas because they recognize their success will most likely lead to a head coaching opportunity.

There is not room for your friends that will stay with you forever in that coordinator scenario. That impedes progress.

I have to agree with everything you said my man. Good stuff!

We are on the same page.  As I said elsewhere, Strong's best shot at survival (if he gets another year) is to act as DC!  He is a better defensive coordinator than anyone he could go out and hire (with or without the university president).  If he was on the market as a DC, people like Meyer and Saben would be interested if they had an opening.

Promote Jean-Mary to DC (in name only) and run that side of the ball!

You must want to kill Charlie. :)    I know enough that being the Head Coach at UT is a full time job and being DC at UT is a full time job. I suppose if Charlie stops sleeping at night and cutting out family time he can do both jobs.

I agree that Saban would want CS as a DC. Saban was a good DC and he's smart enough to know that he needs a good DC like he had with Kirby Smart. Which shows that Saban would not place some position coach as DC (in name only), he would want the best DC he could get.

MMMM... I don't know Primal D; I think that plenty of Head Coaches focus on the side of the ball that is their specialty....  There are certainly head coaches calling offensive plays.  Perhaps I did word it a little bit strong; get a like minded DC to share some of the load with (see Jean-Mary) but the defense should be his  baby and he should call the defense.  By the way, a big part of what he did was simplify.  He said he only called three defenses all game.

I bet he gets a lot more rest after a game like last week than one when his defense (that he passively watched) gives up close to 700 yards.

I'm not talking about calling plays during the game. I don't if Charlie or the DC calls the plays as long as the defense plays well.

It's the planning during the week which I have read is the most important part and while Charlie should be involved, he should have one of the top young DC's just like Saban had with Smart.

If CS survives this season then he should get the best DC he can and if that's Jean-Mary great, Although he's been a part of this staff that hasn't done well. So, I'm not sure if a promotion is in order.

I consider Iowa State as the first test for the defense under Charlie and Kansas State will be the next test this week. However, I will get excited about the defense after the Baylor game in another week if we play well against the Bear's offense. That's going to be Charlie's mid term exam.

I will only give charlie a chance if we win outright. But i honestly believe we will never win a natty with strong.
