Kylie just interviewed Michael Cantu. He confirmed to her that he will not sign an MLB contract and will attend Texas and play for the Horns.

Cantu is a right-handed catcher from Corpus Christi with a good bat. 6'4". 220 - drafted by the Cubs.

Have no clue how he fell that far in the draft. Not going to complain though probably helped us.

He probably told the scouts/teams recruiting him that he was going to college, and named a price that he'd sign at that was higher than his slot.

Once word got out, he slides in the draft.  That's a pretty typical scenario in the first year draft.  Usually has nothing to do with the player's ability.

True. Money talks though. Thought for sure someone would have drafted him higher and tried to entice him with a more lucrative contract.

THIS!  Had Cantu not been such a lean to play at UT his draft stock would have soared much better than Round 30.  This kid's bat is electric.

Believe (dont quote me) he wanted at least a second round pick to not come. Glad he is here.

So what does this mean for Tres next year?
I'm going to give a different take than DJB on this.  I think the correct answer is, "nobody knows."

Cantu isn't on campus yet, so to say he's going to step in and replace Tres behind the dish is premature.

Boswell is a world-class SS, so where do you put him?  Does he replace CJ at SS?

If Boswell doesn't replace CJ, does he play 3B?

Gurwitz has been a pretty damn good mitt at 3B this year, do you yank him for a FR?

Don't forget about McGuire.

I think that Texas has a pretty dang good track record of not anointing an incoming player as a savior or starter until they prove themselves between the lines against the other members of the team.

I'm personally going to take a wait & see approach until we get to that point.  It's way too early to project anything in my opinion.

The dugout likes Barrera so much, they let him call pitches from behind the plate. That's pretty rare in college.

I could see Cantu getting some midweek starts at C to relieve Barrera, but on the weekend, my guess is DH (if his swing adjusts to college pitching).

It's a good problem to have but Augie has some decisions to make next year. Really interested to see what he does next year with the starting rotation. If French comes back he will start. After that anyone out of Hollingsworth, Cooper, Schimpf, Duke, and Clemens could start. I'm also starting to think Schiraldi might come back. The way Roger was talking about Lukas and Kacy playing together for a few years in a recent interview, makes me think that Roger has the impression that Lukas will be back for his senior year.

These things are never over until the kids go to that first class.
