Sorry, I need a break from the stress of work and worrying about 2015 football commits. Though I am 100 percent commited to excellence in both regards. I was fortunate to see Lynyrd Skynyrd twice. In Austin, at Memorial Auditorium in 1976 and again on July 4, 1977 in Tulsa, Oklahoma at "Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic". The 1977 concert is special to me because a few months later, the Synyrd band suffered a horrific plane crash, killing Ronnie Van Zant and other band members. I will attest that at the 1977 concert "Van Zant let the Free Bird fly". Heard a song off "Street Survivors" today, made me nostalgic. The plane crash was on 10/20/1977, their album "Street Survivors" was released 3 days prior. The album cover had them walking down a street, surrounded by flames and carnage. The album cover, after the crash, was immediately pulled off the shelves and replaced, due to circumstances. I'm told the "original" album cover, before it was pulled, purchased early, is worth a lot of money today, collector's item. I miss you, Ronnie Van Zant. Damn, you were great!

Great and touching story. I was at a "Willie Nelson 4th of July Picnic" right about that same year in Dripping Springs, and believe at the time it was the very first picnic he'd put on. Or at least near Austin. Darrell Royal, that day, was hanging around the stage, Rita and Kris where there, and I believe Waylon. Man that was a long time ago.

(I remember when the plane went down and watching Walter Cronkite report the story on the CBS evening news. He mispronounced the band name as "lynyerd skinyerd." That was my first introduction to the concept of generational disconnect. Now, back to my early morning rant...)

(I'm working on my "old man" rant. I certainly don't have my delivery down. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. If I'm going to get old, I want to do it with the proper style and panache.)

Pre '77 was the real Skynyrd era.

Not that I want to tell you how to live your live, but do what you can to check out live music whenever possible and don't be afraid to drop a $10 in the tip jar from time to time. A number of musicians are really creative people. When given the opportunity to take a break from all the world's troubles to enjoy a sandwich and a beer, some of them come up with some really interesting stuff.

If you make it to the spring game, I will tell you about when I was bartending as an undergrad and I had Stevie Ray Vaughn, Rick Danko, Stephen Stills and Gordon Van Elkstrom at the bar talking about life for two hours. One of those experiences you just don't get anywhere but Austin.

With two tikes and another scheduled to arrive within a month, I dont think I will be attending too many live music events anytime soon. Unfortunatrly you're more likely to see me at a disney on ice.

This thread reminds me, when I was in college i saw george jones at stubbs and darryl royal was in the audience. I thought it was pretty cool at the time, but never realized it was an experience of a lifetime.

I am going to have to play the spring game by ear. Not sure how the wife will be feeling at that point.
