Strong wants Texas focused, ready to play well against Arkansas
In his first remarks during a media teleconference regarding his team's berth in the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl, Texas head coach Charlie Strong made his message clear.
It's a good thing the Longhorns rallied from a 2-4 start to finish 6-6 and make a bowl game. At the same time, the Dec. 29 contest against Arkansas is one where the Longhorns need to have a good showing.
“We've got to go play well,†Strong said. “We didn't play well in our last game.â€
Strong has a great deal of respect for Arkansas head coach Bret Bielema, two former defensive coordinators who used to see each other frequently on the road recruiting. He likes that Bielema stuck to his plan at Arkansas to rebuild the program and as a result had a season where the Razorbacks finished with one of the nation's best ground attacks as both Jonathan Williams and Alex Collins went over the 1,000-yard mark while knocking off LSU and Ole Miss with close calls coming against the likes of Mississippi State, Missouri and Alabama.
Strong respects the challenge, but more than just playing the Razorbacks he feels the Longhorns need to be ready to show the nation they're a much better team than the one that was blasted by TCU on Thanksgiving night.
“We've had an opportunity to talk about that game and it's over now,†Strong said. “We've got to get our focus back and be ready to play good Arkansas team.â€
After a poor showing during the 48-10 season-ending loss to the fifth-ranked Horned Frogs, Strong wants to be able to send his seniors out the right way. John Harris, Cedric Reed, Jordan Hicks, Steve Edmond and Quandre Diggs are among the Longhorns who will play their final college game ever at NRG Stadium against the Razorbacks, and Strong wants the returning players for the 2015 season to – if nothing else – put it on the line for their teammates one last time.
“Some of these seniors, this is the last time they'll play a football game,†Strong said. “I look to them and where they've helped us get and we want to end it right and play well for them."
