Mike Griffith: Texas is Georgia’s primary focus this offseason

The Georgia Bulldogs face three SEC contenders on the road next season in Alabama, Texas and Ole Miss. According to one writer who covers the Bulldogs, it’s the Texas Longhorns who will get the most focus this offseason.

DawgNation beat writer Mike Griffith had the following to say of the matchup between Texas and Georgia.

“Georgia doesn’t think too much, Kirby (Smart) doesn’t think too much, about Alabama. Really the Oct. 19 game at Texas is the big headache.”
Griffith’s strong take is a surprising one given Alabama’s sustained success over the last decade and a half. Whether or not it was a subtle dig at the Crimson Tide is up for debate, but the beat writer shared that Georgia faithful have a high esteem for Texas and head coach Steve Sarkisian.

“They’re looking at (Georgia vs. Texas) as probably the game that’s gonna decide the SEC in Texas next year. And, to me, that’s what I’ve heard more about, is the game in Austin.”
SEC Network host Paul Finebaum pushed back reminding Griffith of Georgia’s road battle with Alabama earlier in the season. Of course the Tide isn’t going away, and should provide a tough battle for the Bulldogs. Nevertheless, Griffith didn’t back down and further explained his reasoning.

“That’s a (Texas) staff that’s been in place, that’s a team that beat Alabama by 10 points in Tuscaloosa last year. That’s an impressive program that Steve Sarkisian’s built and they’re a real threat to the SEC with their budget. So, to me, I think that’s the big threat right now. People talk about Texas and Georgia at the top of the SEC, and then you get into the second tiers.”
Griffith listed Alabama, Tennessee, LSU, Ole Miss and Missouri as second tier teams in 2024. Undoubtedly, that tiering with cause a stir in the southeast, but the Longhorns and Bulldogs, based on last season and what they return, look like the clear favorites to reach the SEC championship.

Texas will look to push for a strong start to its first SEC schedule when it opens conference play with Mississippi State on Sept. 28 in Austin.

I'm buying it. Last year, the Alabama game got a lot of focus during the offseason, especially since it was the second game and while Michigan will merit similar attention, I was recently thinking that the Georgia game will get a lot of focus during the off-season. Michigan lost a lot and their coach. A tough game in Ann Arbor, but very winnable. They will be studying Georgia this off-season!

I'm kind of with Finebaum on this one. I think Mike Griffith might been looking for the clicks and attention.

I think Finebaum is looking at the past. Alabama lost so much depth and a lot of starters to the portal once Saban retired. Yes they have a good core, but I think they will have an off year. Winning yes, but likely 3 losses. Is that Georgia's focus?

I personally hope Texas focuses on Michigan with a "first things first" attitude. I'd certainly look at Georgia but Michigan is looming on the horizon.

We need to beat OU too right before we play Georgia. We can’t forget they play out of their minds when they play us majority of the time.

I think we're capable of beating ou pretty badly. Maybe not 49-0, but not far off.

ou has a few very good players. They remind me of what UT once was during Mack's later years. We had good recruits, but only a few really good players. This may be one of those years where the talent advantage really shows up on the field.

Nah, I think Griffith's projections are correct. Bama will fall behind Texas and Georgia. They were hit hard. DeBoer is a good coach but gosh, Bama lost almost everything.

The following year and year after that, I think Deboer has them right back at the top with us and Georgia.

Agree. And Michigan is an away game while Georgia we get at home.

Griffith could be both correct and seeking attention with his take(s) ;)
