Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

247 reporting QB Sam Ehlinger has been limited in practice this week due to a quadricep contusion he suffered against Texas Tech that had swelled to the point that the staff thought he tore his meniscus.

He also suffered damage to his left hand making it difficult to receive snaps.

RB Roschon Johnson has a rib injury but should be available.

F, just beat TCU.  Stop the original octomom from being able to negatively recruit against Texas.  Get that TCU thorn out of their hoof. 2-6 against them since they joined the B12.  Just beat their asses tomorrow.  What more motivation do they need to play with more intensity and more passion?

I know every year it's beat OU, beat OU, but I think about this matchup more than that one (ok, not more each year, but I can tell you this much, I want this team to beat TCU more this year than I want them to beat OU).

The bad news on the OL continues. According to OB, Tyler Johnson is battling some kind of hereditary medical challenge and only this week was cleared for a 50% weight room workout load. And they are working very slowly to get Johnson healthy. That doesn't sound promising for a return anytime soon this season.
Texas seems to have problems every year keeping OL healthy. Then increased numbers would help with this problem.

Question for the board. Does any one else think Ingram might be over weight and lost some speed?

I don't remember if Ingram was ever the the home run threat from long distance when he was recruited. As for the fumble today, I thought it was a bad choice to have him carry the ball there. He had just had back to back plays covering approx. 70 yards and was gassed. Someone else should have carried the ball there.imo

Giving the ball to a player who just made a big play so he can get credit for the score is one of those tendencies that Patterson looks for, as was mentioned in a previous post. I knew Keontay was going to get it, you knew it, and Fat Pat knew it.

Watching Iowa State, blowu. 3rd quarter, 12 penalties total. I have a sick feeling that Rattler is going to have a heisman performance next week.

Well, as was pointed out, it makes you highly predictable.
I didn't finish my previous post because it kind of felt like piling on. While I agree with rewarding a kid's hard work as with Ingram's previous plays, the really good coaches know how to balance that decision with the overall need to win and the benefits of the whole team. Tom seems to struggle with those decisions which never seem to be the case for Saban, Urban, or Dabo. Their players seem to get it that if the team succeeds, everyone benefits. In year's past, the first down play would have been a QB power. Then again, the call may have been made by Jurcich which is the kind of OC play calling autonomy that everyone wondered about and was screaming for. Not to take any of the pressure or responsibility off of CTH.

I looked at it this morning and since the Championship game in 2009 when Colt McCoy got hurt, Texas has a 73-58 record between 3 coaches. That’s been 10 years ago. A few nice wins in there where we all thought maybe we’re turning the corner. It was said a couple of times during this timeframe that Texas is Back.

Mack did alot of great things at Texas but after that game it almost seems like he checked it in but instead retiring/leaving he stayed an drew a bunch of money. Mack seemed to change after that night. Stopped recruiting as hard, fired and hired a bunch of coaches. Seemed to start deflecting more blame at his assistants. Stayed 4 more years and I really think that started setting us back. A lot of rumors but I think we would have had Saban if Mack had retired. Of course they didn’t want to fire him. He’s a nice guy and done alot for the University. I’d heard they were talking to Saban while Mack was still there and it pissed him off, so at that point he wasn’t going to go quietly. This hurt us.

So then they go out and hire Charlie Strong. He was just over his head here. Red was right.......he’s a good coordinator but you don’t hire him as your head coach at Texas. Loses to Kansas.....gone

So they go out and hire a hot young coach, supposed to be one of the best offensive minds in the country. Wins his bowl games impressively. Ok we’re about to turn the corner. Loses some that he should win. New AD comes in and let’s him change nearly all his staff. Pays up the assistants. Got an offensive coordinator so Herman can have more time to manage the whole program. Recruited 3-3-8. Herman said he got out coached again Saturday against TCU. 2 out  of 3 weeks we have gotten out physicaled. He got an extension to 2023 for alot of money. COVID hit and the athletic department lays off a bunch of people and a bunch more take pay cuts. Athletic department losing alot of money probably for the first time ever. So I guess we’ll see how the story develops. BUT this has been a long 10 years.......especially when you see a guy like Rhule come in and start kicking ass in year 2 with probably the # 30 recruiting class. It’s just been exhausting. I guess we just keep “hoping”.

After that championship game:

Mack Brown was 30-21

Charlie Strong was 16-21

Tom Herman is 27-16
