As we wrap up 2013 and move towards 2014, I had the privilege of being invited out to an Advance Skills Camp at Texas Prospect Academy. Texas Prospect Academy is the home facilities of the Houston Banditos. The Banditos are run and operated by Ray Deleon and are highly regarded as one of the Premier Select Baseball organization not only in the Sate but the Country.

Now, how does all of this relate to Longhorn Baseball? Very Simple, Ray and Skip Collegiate career cross paths at UT-Pan Am...Skip and Drew Bishop were out at Texas Prospect Academy running the camp along with the Hitting Scout of the Miami Marlins, Julio Garcia, Seattle Mariners Scout Jeremy Booth and Texas State Asst. Coach Jeremy Fikac.

So, You can only imagine that I was in hog heaven. Watching these coaches work and speak, players from 14-18, trying to make an impression, it was a great day in Tomball, Texas..

So, the main reason for me being out there was that Ray Deleon wanted me to photograph the event. So, there I was photographing and taking the event all in..TO give you some insight into what I do, I always keep to myself..I do not want to be persuaded by Parents, So I will shot and edit as I move around.. As I was observing the players one of my sources came up to me and the conversation turned toward Longhorn Baseball.

We spoke about last season, the frustration of watching the players not perform, recruiting(how the 2011-2012 & 2012-2013 class hurt the team last year), the impact that the freshman will make, the pitching depth, and how does the roster shape up..So, keep in mind I was there in official capacity but, I ended up getting great info on Longhorn Baseball.

RHP Holden Helmink has transferred to San Jacinto, Matthew Moynihan has transferred out and LHP Kirby Bellows will focus on getting his knee healthy. Bellow tore his ACL in his Sr. year of high school during the 1st game of the Football season. He was just beginning to get back to where he wanted to be but he suffered a set back this past summer and had to have his knee cleaned out in August and then in December he had his kneed repaired again. So, the Roster is set at 35.

The Coaching staff are really high on Freshman Bret Boswell, Zane Gurwitz, Tres Barrera, & Andy McGuire. Bret and Andy both came in expecting to push C.J. Hinojosa for the starting Spot at SS. But, CJ came in and realized that he need to up his game. CJ in his best shape he has ever been and has been working out with Austin Dean and Courtney Hawkins up at Texas Prospect Academy. Dean and Hawkins were part of the recruiting class that CJ was in but, they opted out to sign with their MLB team.

Source said that they will have some movable parts in the pitching rotation and be on the look out for Lukas Schiraldi to push for a weekend starting job.. They also want to bring RHP John Curtiss along slowly. Curtiss is coming back from Tommy John Surgey back in the summer of '12.. Source said Curtiss will be more important in June then in March..

Speculate on a starting roster (doesn't have to be a batting lineup) and rotation? Closer? I was thinking Schiraldi at closer.

Thank you for posting.

Of the freshman you mentioned Bret Boswell, Zane Gurwitz, Tres Barrera, & Andy McGuireou; where do we expect them to be in the line-up assuming CJ is at SS.

This is how I see the Starting Roster;

C-Jacob Felts

1st-Tres Barrera

2nd-Marlow-But watch Gurwitz

SS-CJ Hinojosa

3rd-Andy McGuire

LF-Ben Johnson

CF-Mark Payton

RF-Collin Shaw-But again watch for Gurwitz

DH-Boswell, Montalbano

Friday-French

Saturday- Peters

Sunday- Schiraldi

Mid-Week-John Curtiss..slowly..

Closer-Blake Goins

Gurwitz is my favorite..typical dirtbagger.. Watch for him to push Brooks Marlow..If not there then watch for him to push Collin Shaw

Tres Barrera- Very versatile.. Played SS his Jr. year in High school was named All-State there..primarily a catcher..This guy takes working out very seriously..Came in incredible shape..Most likely will end up at 1st.

Bret Boswell- has the speed and range to play SS...But will start off in the DH..

Andy McGuire..What a young man..comes from outstanding family..His hip is completely healed, can really play SS...will end up at 3rd..

Any other questions??

DJB BROUGHT IT! Fantastic baseball scoop Don.

Tailing on UTPhil's question - who can we expect to be the closer this year?

Thanks for the info and pics. As a longtime UT baseball fanatic, I appreciate it greatly and it only gets me more excited for the upcoming season!

The Houston Banditos have expanded into Austin and the Bandito program is for real. Any kids that come out of the program are going to all be dirtbaggers! Go Hard or Go Home! Texas has couple of commits for 2014 from the Austin Group of Banditos! Ray out of Houston and luke out of Austin are doing great things and take a look back at their kids that have been drafted recently - it is a crazy- they shol dbe putting the team a kid plays for instead of their HS it would tell you a lot more about what type of player you are getting- everyone of those Bandito kids will starting sooner than later- they are driven

Anyone to give Felts a run at the catching position?
Both Montalbano and Barrera will both give Felts a run..But, to me Jacob is the catcher from day 1..I think Skip is more comfortable with Jacob behind the plate..Plus he is a Sr and the pitchers are more comfortable with him..I know he always starts off slow, but when the temperature increases so does his batting avg..

Have you and I cross path before?? Albert Munoz runs the program here in Austin, Luke is the head coach for the 17U team..

Albert and Luke have been great to me..I was at the WWBA SQ in Tomball back in September, they saw me and immediately told me to get down to the field to shoot from field level.

Actually Texas has 3 commits from the Austin Banditos, Sr. Michael McCann, Catcher, Cedar Ridge High School, RHP Mason Thompson, Sophomore, Round Rock High School, SS, Austin McNicholas, Sophomore, Austin High School..

We may have crossed in the past, I am baseball guy, love it! hence my dirtbag name, I am very involved in local select tournaments and have seen these kids play and I forgot about Austin committing. The Austin Banditos is a really really good group of guys and their program is solid and is only getting better- keep an eye on the 13u and 14u kids these are the current 7th, 8th and 9th graders they have some salty players that have been getting some national attention.

Talked to a friend who is close to the team this year. He thinks that Thornhill may be closing this year with Schiraldi taking over Sunday starts.
