Briles is no grand slam
If you mean by big splash I would agree. If you mean by a sure thing to be a good/great coach here, no one truly is. Hell, I might get slammed for this opinion, but even with a big splash like Saban you have to wonder if he might start hitting that part of his career where things start to slide. I say that because at Texas he would be starting over essentially and who knows if he could even pull it off. Granted he probably has a better chance than most, but nothing is guaranteed.

Briles has proven more than malzahn
He has built 2 programs that are historically terrible from scratch

Malzahn made a run with one of the greatest college qbs of this era

And is now making a run with someone else's players

Malzahn was the offensive coordinator at Auburn from 2009-2011. Every offensive player on that roster save the 2013 class was recruited under his watch and needed Malzahn's signoff to get a scholarship. They were players recruited for his offensive system. Those are every much "his" players as much as anyone.

You can remove Meyer from your list, so I've been told. IMO, Gruden isn't a serious candidate for Patterson.

Your Triples are good to go. Jimbo is probably the third man on that list.

Your Doubles . . . on stand by.

So I notice you have both Jim and Jon Harbaugh on your Home Run list. If it comes down to those two, which one do you go with? And why?

IMO, I think Harbaugh is being used a leverage with another on your Home Run list. IF so, Patterson is as sharp as I think he is.

I like where you are going with this.

Good question...I like Jim because of his success in the college game even though John has the SB ring. John doesn't have much college experience but I still think he would do very well.

Hmm....so Meyer is off....Gruden not on the radar....Harbaugh used as leverage(I'm guessing Jim)....so Saint Nick is truly back in play again?? Dang I would love that!

Saban has been my top guy for a while.

If Texas cannot land any of the home run guys I hope Briles is the first guy called over Fisher.

If i am choosing btw Jim and John, thats easy, Jim. John has never even been an OC/DC in college. John does have 13 years as a collage position coach but most have been as a ST coach. Jim is much much much more proven in college and was impressive as the Stanford coach and went 11-1 twice at WKU. Jim is clearly a proven college coach.

Looking up stats i was surprised to see that Jim H went 29-21(2 losing seasons) at Stanford and really had to bring Stanford back from ruins while Shaw is 34-6.

Briles and Malzahn over Fisher for me.

Is John or Jim the better HC, in your opinion?

Yea, Jim rebuilt that program on toughness and discipline. Shaw's enjoyed the fruits of that, but it takes a good coach to keep the program on top, too.

Didn't know Jim's record at WKU. Thanks for those stats.

Jim coached at U of San Diego. His father, Jack, is the one who was head coach at Western Kentucky. Jim helped out when he wasn't busy with NFL.

Do not get the love for Gruden.

Do not want Tomlin. Think it would be a huge fail. Bad fit.

Franklin intrigues me but the skins on the wall aren't there.

Scared to death that Mora is the safe uncontroversial pick. He could just as likely underperform Mack in some ways. Would not rally the fanbase.

I don't think Art Briles and Jim Mora Jr are grand slams, not even close.

If Mack Brown can come in and do with Texas what he did, Art Briles could do more.

And when I think of Grand Slam, I think of clearing the bases. When I first read the post I was thinking Patterson would clear football, basketball and baseball.

Art Briles would be an outstanding hire. I would pick some above him, but its with who UT ended up with I'd be happy

FWIW, here are my possible big hires (in order):

1. Jim Harbaugh

2. Nick Saban

3. John Harbaugh

4. Gus Malzahn

5. Meyer

6. Shaw

7. Art Briles

Jim is my favorite based on his age and attitude. Although I see his attitude possibly becoming a problem here. He'll call out crap whenever he sees it, and there is plenty of that at Texas right now.

Nick because he is Nick.

John because I believe he is a hell of a coach. May be more cooperative than his brother, but lacks college experience.

Gus because he has been a damn good coach wherever he has been. He can do more with less talent just like Mora and Franklin, but he has gotten over the hump in a short time, unlike those two.

Meyer because he has reached out to Texas and has skins on the wall, but he is lower down on my list because of character issues. There is also something else that I can't really put my finger on that makes me not like him.

Shaw because he has continued what Jim built, which is quite remarkable. He is down on the list because he hasn't shown that he can build something on his own.

Briles because he has been able to bring in talent and build terrific offenses no matter where he has been. He is down on the list because he doesn't seem to give a damn about defense.

Surprised that no one mentions Gary Andersen at Wisconsin. I've been reading Scipio Tex's stuff on Barking Carnival about him and he makes a pretty compelling case for him. Not the big name splashy hire but it sounds like he can flat coach.
