This is open for discussion of course but how about this for "home run":

Gus Malzahn

Jimbo Fisher

John Gruden

Art Briles

John Harbaugh

I put those in the grand slam list because they are all proven winners at the college level. The home run list has at least a question mark, but obviously proven winners.

I think Saban is still an option too. Did anyone hear Ricky Williams interviewed on ESPN Saturday after Mack announced his resignation?

They asked him who he thought would be a good replacement coach and he said he couldn't answer the question because he is a coach and didn't want to hurt his chances of becoming a position coach. I just found it to be an interesting answer at the time since there were rumors Saban might have contacted him.

Extremely pleased with everyone on that list. A little less with Mora and Briles.

Gruden is not a grand slam and hasn't been a hc in college nor won anything in college

Hopefully, we don't have to go any farther than that.

I trust McPhaul on who is in contention. Therefore, this is what I have:

What is a grand slam?

I dont consider many coaches a grand slam. Certainly not Gruden, who i consider a single. A coach who hasn't coached college AND hasnt coached in 6 years is not all that.

Briles has proven more than malzahn

He has built 2 programs that are historically terrible from scratch

Malzahn made a run with one of the greatest college qbs of this era

And is now making a run with someone else's players

Hard to argue with that. I think everyone needs to separate the "Hot" coaching hire from the "Consistently Good" coaching hire. You can't put too much stock into 1 season because there are so many other factors to consider. That's not to say Malzahn wouldn't be great here. He's show a track record of winning. It's more about looking at a whole body of work and the situation the coach was/is in.
