Being old does doesn't mean you have a freebie..I mean this as respectfully as it can be said, but I don't care how people were raised or what era they are from, I am not interested in how things use to be...not because I don't care about history, but because the era that many hold fond memories of was also one of inequality for minorities and women. The world we we live in is ever changing, there is no stopping change, either evolve or become extinct. To ask me to temper my feeling about statements due to the fact that they came for someone who grew up in a different era than I is ridiculous. Respect is earned by actions, and it maintained in the same way..Red is filthy stinking rich so he surly could not care any less, but that man does not have my respect.

Everyone, please stop and listen for a minute. What McPhaul is asking of you is a little patience, which I think is what you are wishing that Red would exercise. I agree.

I'm not trying to justify his actions nor the opinions he is expressing. I think he is wrong. Unfortunately, I think the long threads calling him names and expressing outrage are probably making the situation worse. How? It's keeping things going, snowballing. Mass media is wonderful, but it can have very unfortunate, unintended effects when people use it to blow off steam. Think about last Friday night, and think about the situation that Red is creating now.

We certainly get into a great deal of trouble when we aren't in Spring Training and we aren't in Football Season. You think?

Hook 'em, Coach Strong!

I don't post here much, just a lurker. Breaking silence to give a few thoughts.

1) Red can EABOD. That Redneck made our University look like a backwards thinking group longing for the era of Jim Crowe. Perception is reality and the fact that ESPN picked it up makes it reality on a national level.

2). The "he is old and came from a different era" excuse is BS, wrong is wrong.

3). The silly notion that anyone's level of money buys respect, "a respectful and disrespectful way to address a BMD?" How about a respectful way to address a person?

Ban me whatever, but that is the truth.

What I don't understand is , why before Patterson made the decision to select the HC , why didn't all the BMD's get together with the new AD and let them tell their views , so we wouldn't have to reach this point with this embarrassment to the Horn nation.

Won't argue anything you said here. But the problem is he went after Strong and made it personal. Like you said. It was Powers and Patty that Red was mad at. Why embarrass Strong?
He can be as pissed as he likes and probably has a right to be. But he attacked an innocent man. That is why he is getting everyone's venom.
I totally understand and agree. I'm am not and will not defend what he said...the way he expressed his frustration was indefensible. He should have said nothing about Strong beyond he looks forward to great success from him. His choice of words and criticism of an innocent party in Strong completely destroyed any legitimate point he may have had.

Red is a great guy and has done wonders for himself and UT, without question. He is known at times to say bunch of crazy things. I think he was infinitely angry because he thought he had a vote, because he always had a vote, and nobody sent him a memo this time around that he did't have one. (No excuses)
I hope that we can all forgive Red. I suspect an apology will be forthcoming. At the end of the day he wears orange socks and lives in an orange house. And in a few weeks, this will all be irrelevant.
My problem is that I guess I have always misunderstood the meaning of a donation. I thought it was voluntary for the betterment of an individual or institution. The problem with a select few of our great BMDs is that their donations are conditional. They feel that they are bigger than the institution that they donate to and are entitled to dictate and rule without consequence. Red's comments and actions reflects poorly not only on him but on the rest of us and I for one think he is an embarrassment regardless if his name is on the side of a building on campus. Since a "BMD" is capable of donating much more than I on a annual basis it allows for them to have a reprieve for being an ass I guess?

McPhaul has contacts within the program and among the BMDs. Maybe he should be talking to them to relate the anger from the bottom up instead of the rank and file being told to be tolerant with respect to comments we find repugnant. What's making things worse isn't the outrage being expressed. Red is making things worse by going on yet another radio program to spew his hate. He should be directing his hate at Patterson, not the national sports media. When is Red going to just shut up and quit embarrassing the University? That should be the issue. If I was the one with high level contacts, I would be asking that exact question, but I'm not the one with the access to the decision makers.

Nodding my head SO HARD here.

I will say this... most neutral media (not rivals) see this as a disgruntled booster. Our rivals are clowning and will use againstbus dor bragging and recruiting. Still not good for program.
