Just a simple question. Do you think we are getting better?

Several discussions about Charlie and if he wins the remaining games or makes it to so many wins should he keep his job or not.  I just want to ask the simple question. Do you think we are getting better?

I think the recruiting and the offense are getting better.
Agree, but the defense played more aggressively against BU too. This team has to take chances and force turnovers. It isn't good enough to hold Big 12 offenses to < 30 points.

You guys have very low standards. We have the talent to win the big 12. We dont have the staff to however. Anything less than the big12 championship is a fail. Congratulations im sure we are showing progress.

Kansas won a conference game, i guess you can say they are getting better however they will not sniff a big12 championship title.

We are the worst p5 conference and are getting smoked. How is that acceptable?

In year one, we were scrambling to become bowl eligible and Charlie made at least one WTF decision every game. In year 3, nothing has changed.

So the answer to the question is no.

In some other posts, I have made the argument that 8-4 this year represents a push over last year and therefore we are not getting better. And I also pointed out that Charlie has a less than sterling record of 8-17 against teams with a pulse.

Here's a little further expansion on that 8-17 record.

In 2014

Charlie was 3-7 against teams with a pulse.

In 2015

He was 3-6 against teams with a pulse. However, that could have easily have been 6-3 considering how the Cal, OSU, and Tech games played out. Certainly could have been 5-4. so the actual record was a push but we could have easily been better.

In 2016

We are currently 2-4 against teams with a pulse. Both wins could have been losses but 2 losses could have also been wins so the 2-4 is pretty much spot on. If we win out and win a bowl game, that pushes this record (against teams with a pulse) to 6-4 for the year.

So with a better team in 2016 than 2015 and an easier schedule, even if we win out, we will basically finish about the same as 2015 could and/or should have. So, no, I do not think we are getting better.

"What difference - at this point, What difference does it make?"

I just figured this quote kinda hits the nail on the head.

It depends what you mean by getting better. Are we talking about now compared with 2 months ago, or now compared with 2 years ago?

If we compare our current play with how we played against Cal or OSU, I think we're a bit better. Offense looks about the same (and Buechele has more experience now). The defense looks a little better with regards to the fact that we're not seeing the same horribly missed tackles and coverage breakdowns like what we saw in those games, but many of the issues are still there.

If we're talking about comparing our current position to how the team was when Charlie started, I don't think we're any better. Our offense is much better, but our defense is much worse, and special teams is still a dumpster fire. Of course, one could easily argue that the defense that year was only good because of upperclassman leaders (Ced Reed, Malcom Brown, Desmond Jackson, Steve Edmond, Quandre Diggs, and Mykkele Thompson were all starters). Conversely, one could also argue that it's Charlie's fault that the offense didn't improve in 2015 because of his insistence on keeping Watson and Wickline at OC.

yes, we've gotten better.
As it stands right now, I can't see the case for thinking we have gotten better.

But here is a scenario that I could see the case for it.

Win the final 4 games in the following fashion.

1. Beat Tech and TCU convincingly enough that the outcome is not in doubt by halftime with clear definitive improvement on the defensive side of the ball.

2. Beat West Virginia. Period.

3. Beat Kansas by a minimum of 40 points and completely and totally dominate them so bad that the starters only play 1 or 2 series in the 2nd half.

That's improvement. Just scraping by Tech and TCU and losing to West Virginia will not be improvement but rather just more of the same.

I just do not see this team being or getting better as the play and execution on the field continues to very poor.  I am not seeing this team getting better from the beginning of the season to now and I am not seeing this team getting better from Charlie's first year to his third.  This reminds me of Ex OU Coach John Blake who was great at recruiting and improved the talent level of the team greatly but there was no improvement for those same players on the field. Bring in Stoops and wham you saw an immediate improvement .

Our offense is much better than it was year 1

Our defense is much worse than it was year 1

Mack Brown's last team would beat any of our last 3.

Better = no; worse = no.  We are what we are it seems.

This pretty much sums it up.

So it begs the question what benefit has Strong brought to our school.  His ST plays like crap.  His defense is awful. His clock management is a joke.  The offense is better but is that due to Gilbert and Shane or is it Strongs doing? Gilbert and Shane.

In fairness he has brought in top 10 classes, core values and his players and player parents love him.

With the talent he has we should be winning more games.  I think it was NTG that pointed out his record vs decent teams is pitiful.

I agree with this post. Charlie has done some good things but overall the program has been a

disappointment during his tenure. Of course things were bad when he took over and he had a

considerable rebuilding job to do.
