in Texas Longhorns Basketball By Chris Flanagan
#20/20 Texas (13-4, 2-2 Big 12) at TCU (14-3, 1-3 Big 12)
Monday, January 19, 2015 – 6:00PM (CST)
Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center (4,750) - Fort Worth, Texas
Broadcast: ESPNU
TCU started the season 13-0 with a perfect non-conference record. The Horned Frogs beat Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Washington State – it wasn't all cupcakes for TCU. However, the Horned Frogs started the 1-3 in Big 12 play with their only win coming against Texas Tech. The breakout year in the Big 12 appears to still be at least one year away.
This season the Horned Frogs are playing their home games at Wilkerson-Greines Activity Center. Capacity at Wilkerson-Greines is nearly 5,000. Even though it is used mostly for high school events, the arena holds enough for TCU basketball games while they renovate their on-campus facility.
Kyan Anderson is the leader of the Horned Frogs. Without a tremendous amount of talent around Anderson, the Longhorns will do everything they can to stop him.
Prediction
Conference standings in the Big 12 are going to be close all season. Courtesy of dropping a game on their home court, Texas needs to win all the road games they can. Since winning away from the Erwin Center is going to be difficult in conference play, Texas Tech and TCU are must-win road games.
Last year, the Longhorns struggled to put away the Horned Frogs. I don't expect that to be the case this year. The Longhorns get a critical Big 12 road win.
Texas wins 65-46
TCU series info:
- Last meeting: Texas 66-54 (March 5, 2014; Austin).
- UT has won nine straight and 13 of 14 against TCU.
- The Horned Frogs hold a 42-37 advantage in games played in Fort Worth.
- TCU's last victory in the all-time series came on Jan. 10, 1995 in Fort Worth.
Last game….Texas 77 – West Virginia 50:
- Texas held West Virginia to just 50 points on 24.1% FG shooting and posted a +12 (44-32) rebound margin. The 24.1% marked a UT record for lowest FG percentage defense in a Big 12 regular-season contest.
- Junior center Cameron Ridley posted a season-high 19 points (8-of-10 FG), six boards and four blocks. Ridley tied a career high in field goals made (8-of-10), set a season high in points (19) and tied his season high in blocked shots (four).
- Jonathan Holmes recorded his third double-double of the season with 16 points & 11 rebounds.
TCU Notes:
- TCU has already bettered its win total from a year ago and from 2011-12.
- The Horned Frogs were a perfect 13-0 in nonconference play (wins vs Bradley, vs Mississippi State, and at Ole Miss) before losing 3 straight conference games to start Big 12 play (vs WVU, at KSU, vs Baylor).
- The Frogs rank in the Top-25 in the NCAA in blocks per game (No. 12), field goal percentage defense (No. 2), rebounding margin (No. 23), scoring defense (No. 6) and total blocks (No. 14).
- In TCU's 14 victories this season, the Frogs have out-rebounded the opposition by an average of 10.5 boards. In three losses, TCU was out-rebounded by an average of 8.0 rpg.
- Similarly, TCU is averaging 15.8 assists per game in wins and only 9.7 in losses.
