*****Game Thread - Texas vs. San Jose State

I’m glad to see the adjustments more than anything. USC is going to be a pretty interesting game.

My thoughts . . . .

1. San Jose or not, 56-0 is a very desirable result. I think we've found ourselves a QB.

2. Nothing spectacular out of Ehlinger, but he didn't have to be. He just drove the bus and stepped up himself when needed.

3. Defense pitched a shut out. Same offense put up 16 in the first quarter last week against Charlie's team.

4. Holton Friggin Hill.

5. Hemphill-Mapps continues to impress. And he's only going to get better.

6. Colin Johnson had a couple drops. That can't happen.

7. OL played well after some confusion early. Nicholson-Okafor duo had trouble early.

8. Was quite happy with the coaching. Players were prepared, ready to play, and kept their heads in the game the whole way. Nice game plan with return to the running game.

9. Chris Warren can be AA if he keeps this up. I am no longer a Porter skeptic. Would like to have seen Johnson.

10. Gary Johnson can play.
Yup that QB is Shane.

He didn't get a team effort like what Sam got today, not even close, not today, not last year.

Sam did a great job and definitely will be the starter be at some point it's not going to be this year UNLESS Shane stays hurt.

I have no doubt Shane could have had a better performance with the team that was on the field today.

All on point. Warren looked like a D'onta foreman out there, we needed this. Ready to read the admins story on this game. Everyone said the "old" Texas would kill em well..... the new Texas did it. Just keep this momentum goin. Hope Ronnie Perkins was as impressed as I was!

Ready to see what there all about against Stanford. I'd rather them

win the game just so out upset next week looks that much better. Give the ball to Warren and don't let up

The two big changes this week were the opponent and the game plan. Had we focused on running the ball with Warren last week we would be 2-0. Hat's off to the coaches for making the adjustments on both sides of the ball. Sam did well but Shane is the better QB right now
You realize the game plan this week can't be run with Shane at QB, right?

I like Shane, but Sam made some good decisions and ran with more confidence than Shane. His stats would be better if not for the drops. Still hoping for a quick recovery for Shane.

Good effort all around today. Some things that stood out to me:

1. Ehlinger held his own today and it was encouraging to see him get comfortable and execute the offense. He got away with some throws that should have been picked off and I'm sure that will get drilled into him when they watch the film. Also had some passes that just weren't great and probably wants back.  For a rookie making his first start you will take it. Didn't look shook or rattled and just played football.

2. The offensive line and running backs/ running game was infinitely better this week. Ehlinger had a clean pocket to work with and time to scan the field and the OL dominated SJSU's defensive front to the tune of 400+ yards on the ground. I know SJSU isn't great, but give these units a game ball for giving Ehlinger something to lean on.

3. Speaking of the run game, I'm guessing the staff was trying to conserve Chris Warren, because he could have had well north of 200 yards rushing if they fed him today.

4. If Holton Hill picks it off then he's taking it to the house.

5. We got a taste of Gary Johnson today. More please.

6. Malik Jefferson looked pretty active today. Looked like he was playing confident, which is a good sign.

7. Patrick Hudson practically carried Warren into the end zone for a touchdown and it was awesome. Man strength. He also got banged up and had to get helped off. Hopefully he's okay.

8. The defense pitched a shut out and limited SJSU to less than 200 yards of offense. Their punter got a nice work out today. You take it no matter who you are playing.

9. Why does Kyle Porter keep getting split out in empty formations?

10. It was a brief showing, but I'm intrigued by Daniel Young. I want to see him get a few more totes.

11. Heard's package of plays is about what I expected. Basically a glorified wildcat package with a few passes mixed in.

12. Didn't hear much from Devin Duvernay today.

Just some of the things off top.

Agree he's going to be a great.

My point is and continues to be is that Shane gives this team the best opportunity to win at USC and compete in the big 12 this year.

Those drops cut both ways. SJSU had af least two picks they should have had.

And Maryland dropped 3 last week and had another nullified on an offsides.

I liked that Sam would step into throws even when the pocket was collapsing, Shane tends to throw off his back foot.

Another thing that should be noted. San Jose State was only giving up 3.81 yards per rush coming into this game. Texas averaged over 6. There is no denying that having a threat to run the ball at QB helps immensely in all facets of the offense.

Thank you defense I can sleep well tonight.

Chris Warren, Carter and even Young makes me wonder why Porter isnt 4th in the depth chart.  Porter played better after Warren beat the crap out of the defense.  The Porter/Warren difference kind of reminds me of the J Gray/Foreman difference.  One basically get arm tackled on the first touch and the other offers up pain to the defense.

Worried about our secondary next week.  Still some breakdowns that a good team will exploit.  DL pass rush is still non existent.

GARY JOHNSON!!!  Thank you for playing  ;)   MJ played great.

Sam did admirable for his first collegiate game.  Had all day in the pocket at times.

Proud of the team to pitch a shut out.  Defense baby!

All in all this is what we hoped for. Nice effort today. Life is good again. Now all I need is my Cowboys to win tomorrow.

Nope, Shane was injured on the sidelines. We didn't learn anything from Shane today. After today, I know Sam can play and have success.

I don't know what to say about your second statement, other than you're at least implying that an entire offensive unit chose to play for one QB and not the other.

I hope Shane is able to go against USC. I never intended my post to be an indictment of Shane. By contrast, it spoke nothing of Shane because he didn't play. Sam had a good game and its okay to acknowledge that, as I did.

I don't think you have any idea what would have happened if Shane played today. I don't either.

There were a lot of positives today.  I'm still concerned that receivers are getting behind our defensive backs on a regular basis. Had SJSU been playing a QB who could throw, the game would have looked different.

No I don't realize that. I want Warren running the ball not the QB unless Heard is in the game. With the Defense playing like they did today, a  run first mindset, and an efficient QB keeping the opponent from stacking the box. We can win a lot of football games

USC just put 347 yards at halftime against Stanford.  If those receivers get past our cbs it will be a long day
