"First-hand Dodds experience and why Mack won't return

In March, Dodds came and talked to my sports journalism class. Our class consisted of 20 students. We were allowed to ask him questions on anything we wanted. No rules.

Yes, I am aware that Dodds stepped down. But, I think what he said does cover a Mack departing.

When asked what the state of Mack Brown is and his future, here is what Dodds said...

"Tennessee had Phil Fulmer as coach, won a national championship, doing great things. Had three average years, fired him. Since they’ve fired him, they have had three different coaches and haven’t won yet. Could fire him (Mack) and take the chance, but we are staying with him because he will turn it around."

My analysis:

Before the season started, I believe that Mack understood he had to do better than 2012 - thus turning things around. After the BYU loss and after he fired Diaz, he knew his job was finally on the line. After the Ole Miss loss, I believe he knew it was over. He just wanted to go out on top and win the Big 12. Personally, it appeared all year long that this was Mack's farewell tour. Even hearing him talk at the last OU torch rally, he really looked like he was soaking it all in one last time.

Even if Mack won the big 12 this year, going 10-2 or 9-3, he still would resign. However, because he truly believes the team is THAT close to being great, I think he wants to pass the team off to Major.

Mack cares about the kids, he cares about their future, he cares about this school. I truly believe that he thinks Major is the answer at HC. Going back to the Dodds quote and "three different coaches", setting up Major as HC wouldn't shift the culture drastically. If there was any debate during Mack's meeting, I truly believe it was about Major as the next coach.

For anyone that says that Mack's meeting was ugly, let me ask you... How do you know? And with all the other speculation, how do you know? Because someone tweeted it? Anyone can get on Twitter and type whatever they want. They can throw a source on there and get a bunch of retweets. But think about it, why would someone in that meeting run to a friend, *who they don't trust*, and allow their friend to leak the details of that meeting. Life just doesn't even work like that.

That's all I have.

Yeah F@#K that. If major is the HC, I would be just as pissed as Mack staying. f##king clean house.

if he thinks Major is HC material at Texas, he is more delusional than I thought.

You should have countered with, it took Mack a shorter amount of time to rebuild from John Mackovic than it did to rebuild from Mack Brown.

Firing Fulmer did backfire on Rocky Top. There's no doubt about that. But to replace a proven coach with a douche like Kiffin was lil ut's first mistake and Dooley only had a couple of years under his belt at LaTech. Butch Jones isn't much better, IMO. We here at the real UT have a chance to take on HOF coach and replace them with arguably the greatest coach of the past quarter century. We're not comparing apples to apples in this case. I would be concerned, too, if we were considering replacing Brown with say, Bryan Harsin. But that's not the case. FWIW. :)
