Donald Sterling receives lifetime ban from NBA

& $2.5 mil fine, and hearing he's being forced to sell the team.

Lifetime ban, $2.5M fine...yeah, I'd say the NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, dropped the hammer.

Sterling bought the Clippers for $13M way back when.  Considering the Bucks just sold for $550M, what is LA's #2 team worth?  Darren Rovell speculated that the Clippers will fetch $1B.

I'm sure this isn't settled yet.  Courts will be involved.

I still have a problem with the fact that they are punishing a guy for his own personal opinion in a private conversation.

Doesn't make sense to me.

*NOTE: I think his views are awful and don't agree with them AT ALL.  I just don't see how LEGALLY they can do this.

Agree with you 100%

Frankly, I don't know why a bigot like Sterling would even own a NBA team if he feels this way.  But, it's all about money to some people.  Definitely embarrassing for the Clippers organization.

read up on basic first amendment law. it applies only to governments. an NBA owner has no first amendment right to be free from punishment by the league.

Even if the private conversation in question was recorded illegally?  I believe you, I just want to understand.  Is the NBA governed by their own laws? If that's the case, then I can see it.

what is an illegal recording? in Texas, only one party to a conversation has to consent to a recording. I do not know the law of every state.

of course, the NBA is governed by its internal documents. some laws also apply, but not to discipline of owners, imo. I guess we'll see.

An excellent response by the Commissioner. Now the owners need to step up and remove his Ownership of the team.

In regards to "illegal recording", I've either read or heard that in California both parties must consent...but I'm not positive on that. Of course, that may only apply to whether or not the recording is admissible in court.

Either way, I understand the point that the NBA is its own association, which gives it the right to fine and ban. But I guess they aren't allowed to strip ownership outright without other owners voting him out.

Makes more sense after discussing with you guys.

i'd think his history with discrimination in his real estate holdings likely was considered as well. even if it wasn't, we're all responsible for our words. sure, he has the right to be a bigot, doesn't mean it doesn't come without repurcussions.

I wonder how much dirt Sterling can dig up/expose on the other NBA owners given his considerable resources?

This unsavory situation may get more interesting than people realize.

Not sure that he does not deserve even more than this.  I hope they can find a way to keep him from profiting from the sale of the team.

the lord does indeed moveth upon mysterious ways.  mr. sterling, is now (80+ years old)  it's time to move away from the dark side of life.

Probably overstepping legally but a PR move on his part. ..

Wonder if Larry Johnson gets hit with anything or if his racist comments are acceptable?

I'm going to have to disagree with both of your points. On overstepping legally, the NBA I'm sure has lots of lawyers who went over this ever since the tape came out. Since Donald Sterling has a history of being litigious, I am sure these moves are approved by the lawyers.

As far as a PR move, a PR move is usually an announcement that pleases most everyone but nothing changes.  With sponsors, players and fans ready to revolt the owners had no choice unless they wanted to hurt their bottom line. This is no PR move they want him out of the league since he's so toxic.

Your bringing up Larry Johnson with this as some kind of black racism, I find silly and pathetic.

I saw one poll, perhaps ESPN, that gave choices of 1) punishment too much, 2) punishment just right, 3) punishment not enough?

At the time I saw it, approximately 5% had voted not enough. I laughed, and not because I disagree with the punishment, I do. The man is every vile thing that I can think of. He has no moral compass, but seriously what else can the NBA do? Prison is not on the table.

The NBA took a stand, and a very clear one. He is to be stripped of the team that he owned. He is to be shunned. He doesn't have the qualifications to be one of them.
