Do Not Lower Your Expectations

I am appalled at the lack of confidence in our fan base. I guess decades and decades of underachievement leaves our fans a little gun shy.
Right now, in this particular moment in time, Texas is one of the best jobs in all of sports.

- Economic growth in the state and city of Austin.

- Desired location to live

- Top revenue stream

- Second richest alumni base (behind Harvard)

- Networking capabilities like no other sports job in America (maybe 3 or 4 professional teams in various sports).

- Largest fan base in college football and one of the largest in any American sport.

- One of the 10 largest non track stadiums in the world.

- Largest home recruiting base in the country.

- State produces elite speed and is by far the best state in America to find quarterbacks.

- Easy conference slate.

- Annual game with OU is uniquely one of the great rivalries in all of sports.

- Perfectly set up for the national playoff

- Huge visibility with the Texas markets

- One of the most recognizable logos in the world.

- Top 30 universities in the world based on reputation.

- Admin is more than fair with expectation level.

- Point of No Return because of conference realignment, the SEC, A&M and the Nick Saban saga. This hire must be big and the donors will not settle for less.

- And most importantly? With all the built-in advantages, the program has underperformed on the field and at the facility level for most of its history. The fan base is starving for a winner and someone is going to go down as The Great American Savior of Texas Football. Don't act like the top candidates don't know this. And don't act like the donors won't sell them on it.This job will get no lower on the scale than Jimbo Fisher or Gus Malzahn; and a truly huge name will not surprise.

Preach it!

But "decades of underachievement " doesn't fit. :)

My confidence was shaken with the way the Saban deal was handled. It's not that I don't think there are other good alternatives. It's the idea of Powers having to sign off on it with Mack acting as his special assistant that makes me nervous. ND and Michigan are just as storied as UT and look at their struggles.

I'm cautiously optimistic. We shall see.

agree with Mr Cosell . dont get the extreme negativity about things right now. this is an exciting time for Texas. I think very highly of the AD hire and the coaching hire hasnt even been made
the important thing was it was time for a change at head coach and that was made.
I'm onboard with you guys, this should and I suspect will be a very good hire. Just because it isnt saban doesnt mean it will not be good. Our program has gotten very stale, hopefully the right guy will have us where we wont to be in 2 or 3 yrs

Depends.
What is Patterson's timeline? Its been said he wants a guy before the bowl game.

That would be an issue.
Not if the guy's guy agreed in principle...

Cosell always telling the truth

Mr. Cosell you hit that nail on the head again.....I believe we will get a very Good coach to take us to new heights. Hook'em

I could see us having a new HC for Christmas, as Mack got here before then: "Dodds hired Mack Brown, fresh off an 11-1 season at North Carolina, as the Texas Longhorns head coach on December 4th, 1997."

However, if we wait until after the BCS and NC games, I like our chance with one of the top 3 ranked coaches.

This certainly has an impact: decades and decades of underachievement.
GM
this seems a very wrong perception. We have been one of the top 10 winningest programs in the nation under Mack. So have we underachieved at different points in the past 16 years? Yes. We have particularly underachieved in the past 4 years, but we are not defined by that.

I hope timing is not a problem. I would be willing to sacrifice this recruiting class to get the right coach. The right coach will make up lots of ground during January and the first few days of February.

Hook'em
