Directors Cup Thread

With the points added by baseball and softball this weekend, Texas officially clinches the Directors cup with 3rd place finishes by both track teams even with no more wins on the diamond.

Stanford baseball has to hold on to win tonight and then win again tomorrow. Dropping out early in baseball further hurts their chances and they could actually end up being passed by Michigan at that point.
The track teams are in great shape to both be in the top 3 the next 2 nights!

Good catch on Micaiah, I just mixed up the 100 and 200. I caught a replay of his 100 m heat - first start was called back. 2nd start, the runner next to him flinched in the blocks and Micaiah seemed to get off to a bad start. He was making up ground but no time for that in a 100m race.

Florida has sprinters but nothing else. Not enough meat on the bone for them to score enough to overtake Texas.
Florida has multiple qualifiers in the 100 and 400 as well as a 200 qualifier and 2 relays. All are quality athletes with chances to score high. They can score a lot of points with those sprinters.

100 m - 19th ranked, 9th ranked - 1 pt likely

200 m - 3rd ranked - 6 pts

400 m - 3rd and 10th ranked - 6 pts

4x100 and 4x400 both ranked #1 - 20 pt

so, 33 expected pts. Keep an eye on where they finish, they'd have to have lower ranked runner rise up in the 100 and 400 m to have a chance to break 40 pts, and can't have any missteps.

I think it'll be between them and UGA for 2nd place though I agree, the bigger threat to Texas is Florida at this point.

From experience as an athlete and coach, you can score all those by the season rankings but it rarely works out that way. I’ve added all the points, run scenarios, but until it happens on the track you never know.
I’m just happy we have Coach Flo and we can have these discussions!! Nice to be in the hunt!!

No doubt. Just seems like at this point everything would have to go in Florida's favor for it to be enough. We will know a lot about Florida's chances after the 4x100, 100 and 400 which all occur pretty early tonight and are their best events.

Texas men's track is currently in second place in team points with 20 (10 from shotput, 8 from decatholon, 2 from long jump).

Expected team points remaining:

100 m Micaiah Harris - 10 pts (1st place)

400 m  Jonathan Jones - 8 pts (2nd place)

800 m Yusuf Bizimana  - 0 pts (9th place)

4x100 m Relay team - 0 pts (9th place)

4x400 m Relay Team - 6 pts (3rd place)

That's an additional 24 points with a few opportunities to steal points in the 4x100 and 800 m. Anything over 40 points is likely enough to win the meet.

Predicted final team scores:

Texas - 44

Florida/Georgia -32

Florida State - 28

Not sure their methodology but I did it. Tennessee wasn't one of the teams I predicted a score, may have to go back and see what I can come up with.

These guys know their stuff. I assume they are giving Texas points in the 800 and the 4x100 relay.

Women's track had a very good day 1. Scoring points in long jump and advancing all top 8 ranked runners to the finals.

They have 2 runners in the finals of the 100, 200, 400 m events and 1 in the 800. 4x100 and 4x400 teams are of course strengths as well. Top 3 finishes in high jump, Triple jump and decathalon are also likely.

They are expected to score about 78 points, Florida will be behind them, scoring in the 60s. Unlikely to be terribly competitive for 1st place with a dominant Texas squad.

Men's track starts off with a strong finish in the 4X100 with a 6th place finish. That's 3 points I hadn't included above to bring the horns up to a total of 47 possible.

Florida finished 2nd and loses 2 valuable points by scoring 8 instead of 10.

Points expected.                                                                     Reality

200 m Micaiah Harris - 10 pts (1st place)                              4th place - 5 pts

400 m  Jonathan Jones - 8 pts (2nd place)                           4th place - 5 pts

800 m Yusuf Bizimana  - 0 pts (9th place)                             9th place - 0 pts

4x100 m Relay team - 0 pts (9th place)                                  6th place - 3 pts

4x400 m Relay Team - 6 pts (3rd place)                                4th place - 5 pts

                TOTAL:        24 pts                                                                        18 pts

So instead of 44 total pts, Texas scores 38. Meanwhile, Florida goes wild and scores 54 pts. Texas ends in 2nd

Florida on the other hand had a much better than expected finish to win the national championship. Texas stumbled a little bit but honestly, with how good Florida finished Texas was likely to be 2nd even if they hit their marks.

          Expected points                                                                                 Reality

100 m - 19th ranked, 9th ranked - 1 pt likely                                           1st and 5th - 14 pts

200 m - 3rd ranked - 6 pts                                                                        1st - 10 pts

400 m - 3rd and 10th ranked - 6 pts                                                         2nd and 5th - 12 pts

4x100 and 4x400 both ranked #1 - 20 pt                                                 2nd and 1st - 18 pts

Total expected on Friday - 33 pts                                                      Actual - 54 pts

Likely 10 out of 20 teams finishing top 2 after track and field wraps up.
