I was counting on this being true, but its good to see it confirmed.
I could almost hear a symphony playing as i read that.

You can bet that the Jamail group will not be happy with Saban because of the phony claim that he somehow helped push Mack out. If John Harbaugh is serious, he is the name that will "unite the clans". He also happens to be the best choice for UT to maximize its donor, on field and financial performance in the long term.

But, if someone were to hold a blow torch to my golf clubs, I realistically think it will come down to two candidates:

John Harbaugh - you nailed it when you said an NFL HC job just eats up the coaches time. It's almost 24 hours a day. NFL coaches very rarely get to see their kids grow up. However, college HC's have very little time themselves, but better than the NFL.

Art Briles - It depends on whether or not his interview with Patterson is a hit or not. If he is hired, there will most likely be backlash from a few of the old UT guard that haven't forgiven him for his vote - a few years ago. These guys have long memories.

I'm convinced that John Harbaugh is the right choice to continue the DKR/MB lineage. Too many positives when compared to the the other candidates.

Watched him on you tube. I wasn't overly impressed.

Thanks Darrell. One thing I want to clarify (if possible). If Saban takes the job, we should know by this weekend, right? I would assume if it is anybody else we would probably know by the 10th or 15th?

There is a chance we will know by Friday, right? Assuming Briles uses tomorrow to let Baylor, his players and recruits know?

That is who should be right after Saban. No questions asked. Football people know football.

I like Harbaugh....however I have some pauses with him. He doesn't know the state, hasn't coached college ball in a long time and the offenses in the Big 12 are not like the NFL. Its apples and oranges. He would have to get a DYNAMITE staff around him to help alleviate some of these possible issues. He would have the money to do so.

On Briles again, he is a Texan and is liked by high school coaches. He is one of us that has done it the hard way. His players play with an edge and he coaches with an edge. He coaches like a Texan should...with confidence and toughness. Finally, his offense is dynamic and its not a fluke. It is sound and is predicated off the run which sets up the rest of his playbook off PA and screens. Briles began his career as a DC so to think he ignores that is foolish.

Saban is the no-brainer....then its Briles.

Very good read. I don't know what the heck is going to happen with all of this, but I'm sure enjoying the ride. The key to all of this is that Patterson seems like a smart guy and he knows how important this hire is. I think he will pull out all the stops to make sure UT winds up with an exciting coach.

I appreciate McPhaul and his willingness to put out there what he hears. (As well as others who do so) I realize the double edged nature of what you do and I'm glad that you don't let the negativity stop you.

Thanks for the update Darrell. As always, very timely and enlightening. I've been a Saban proponent since the outset, but the more I learn about John Harbaugh, the more I believe he'd be the better longterm hire.

Another good Crossfire Darrel.ANY of the coaches you list would be a huge x's and o's upgrade over the previous regime. If I was going to pick an order I'd put Saban,Harbaugh,Fisher,Briles,Strong.

Not trying to put the cart before the horse but say Saban comes-any ideas on the oc and dc. Would Narduzzi be in play?

The same 3 in the same order for me too. I think another positive that has not been discussed much about the hiring of JH (and the same for a Saban hiring btw) is the national exposure/interest JH would bring to Texas and the Big 12. I think we can all agree that the Big 12 has slipped mightily in its reputation as a powerhouse conference and garnering much of a national interest/curiosity in its games. You bring in an NFL coach, a super bowl winning NFL coach with the last name Harbaugh nonetheless, and one with limited college football history/achievements, there will be a lot of attention nationally brought to Texas/Big 12 to see how he does. I can see him being discussed on Game Day, initially at least, a lot to see how he makes the transition and changes the Texas "soft" reputation.

Briles would be a good hire too I think, but not sure how many new eyes he would bring to Texas/Big 12 like a Saban or Harbaugh would. Ultimately, it comes down to wins and I think all 3 will succeed there, I just think John brings something different that will bring new viewers to Texas/Big 12 and help slow down the SEC love affair to some degree.
