Commitment Spotlight: Gary Johnson (By Mike Roach)

Tom Herman received a huge boost today when Dodge City (KS) Community College linebacker Gary Johnson committed to Texas.  Johnson officially visited Austin last week, and sources reported the trip went extremely well for Texas.  Johnson chose the Longhorns over offers from Arizona State, Louisville, Miami, USC, Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Ole Miss, TCU, and Oregon among many others.

Johnson is recognized as the top JUCO inside linebacker by most recruiting services in the market.  He speaks openly on his twitter about how he overcame a troubled past to ultimately succeed on the gridiron and receive opportunities to better his education.  A one-time Alabama commit, Johnson opened his recruitment in November, and his relationship with this staff goes back to their time at Houston.  Texas was able to sell Johnson on early playing time, and Todd Orlando was instrumental in this recruitment.  Johnson will enroll during the summer where he figures to factor in at the linebacker spot immediately.  Todd Orlando said on many occasions that he looks for guys who can run and hit, and as you’ll see, Johnson can certainly do that.

Film Analysis:

Johnson is undersized for the traditional inside linebacker role at 6’1, 220 lbs., but he should fit in a passing league like the Big 12.  He’s quick to read and diagnose plays, and he flies to the ball like a missile.  He plays with discipline, and creates quite an impact with the ball carrier.  Johnson can run sideline to sideline, and he makes plays at the point of attack and from the back side.  He shows great explosion off the snap, and he could excel as an inside blitz guy.  His ability in coverage will play up in a passing league.  Johnson looks comfortable in his backpedal, and he has great ball skills as evidenced by multiple interceptions on his highlight.  His motor runs hot, and in every clip you see he’s a max effort guy who plays at full speed.  Johnson shows great change of direction and stop/start ability, which allows him to track down ball carriers in the open field.  He shows a physical approach with plenty of aggression, and he form tackles well.  Johnson routinely keeps his feet moving while wrapping up and exploding through the ball carrier.  He shows a willingness to take on offensive linemen at the point of attack, and he uses his hands well to combat size difference.  Johnson is also a stand out on special teams, where he is typically the first down the field on kick coverage.

Final Verdict:

This is probably the biggest win of the class in terms of instant impact.  Johnson was not a full qualifier out of high school, so he comes to Texas with 3 years to play 2.  He’s just what the doctor ordered for Todd Orlando to augment the lack of true depth at the inside linebacker position.  Expect Johnson to push for a starting spot from the moment he steps on campus.  While he does have some issues with his size to overcome, he should be able to play at an all-conference level with a chance at the NFL in his future.

his size is a concern, but I read where he ran a 4.26 forty which is insane but he also has a 39.4 inch vertical!....If either or both of those things are true he has a chance to be amazing. No team in football at any level would be faster at the LB position,

So the point of this post Mods......is it now is ya'lls mission to verify those comic book numbers.

My brother-in-law teaches/coaches at a small town in Kansas near Dodge City. I called him up and seen if he new much or had seen Johnson play. Told me he had 2 kids playing their and they told him earlier in the year that they (Dodge City ) had this bad ass LB that was insanely fast for his size and said that he gets after it in the weight room/work outs.

How does someone who couldn't get admitted to Alabama because of academics end up getting enrolled at UT Austin?

I understand it was because of a conference rule, not a university rule, but what conference rule was it? How is it that the schools in the SEC have higher academic standards for student athletes than UT Austin?

You may be comparing apples to oranges. Perhaps he could not get into UT either two years ago.

He committed to Alabama last spring and in Oct of 2016 he was told he didn't qualify academically at Alabama. And three months later he commits to UT Austin. As of Oct 2016, a student athlete who was academically ineligible at a SEC school could get admitted to UT Austin.

Supposedly, the SEC rule that tripped Johnson up was that a player had to have spent three consecutive semesters at the school where they earned their Associate degree. Something doesn't sound right.

While I appreciate your input and concern, I am losing no sleep over this issue.
My curiosity is driven by noticing the program has thrown in the towel on character and integrity at Herman's insistence (Casey Horny) and now students who are academically ineligible at some of the most academically lax institutions in the nation have no problem being admitted to UT.
Total control seems to be total control.

A kid who can't get into Mississippi State over academics waltzes into UT Austin. That doesn't raise a few eyebrows?

Where have you seen that he is academically ineligible at any SEC school?

Junior college linebacker Gary Johnson announced on Twitter that he is decommitting from Alabama due to academic reasons. Johnson would go on to say that he cannot enroll in any SEC schools because of the academic requirements in the SEC.

It is rare when someone is academically ineligible at Miss St but waltzes into UT Austin. Like I said earlier, after allowing Casey Horny to set foot on campus, I was wondering just how much leeway Tom Herman is being given.

It seems this isn't a grade issue, but rather a screwy SEC rule issue.
