Texas has their safety – a damn good one at that. B.J. Foster, the No. 1 safety in the country, committed to the Longhorns today. This comes as no surprise, as Foster has been a heavy Texas lean for most of 2017. The Angleton product looks to be Quandre Diggs 2.0, only a little taller (sorry, Quandre).
There’s a reason Foster is the No. 1 safety in the country. He’s got size with plenty of room for growth, athletic, and not afraid to hit you in the mouth. This cowboy turned football player grew up roping steers, and will now play with one on his chest in the form of Bevo. Instead of being a cowboy, Foster will be punishing them in Stillwater, Oklahoma and roping up wildcats and horned frogs instead of cattle. B.J. is destined to be a Silver Spur, imo. Nobody knows how to handle a steer better than him. Look for he and Andrew Beck, a pair of good ‘ol country boys, to become a dynamic duo.
Foster is so important to this class because he is the one true safety in it. Caden Sterns and DeMarvion Overshown can move to other positions once in college. Not B.J. This kid was born to be a safety, and he will do so in Austin. But what makes Foster so good at what he does?
Film Analysis
For starters, Foster is extremely athletic. At Angleton he played both ways: running back on offense and safety on defense. The impressive aspect of Foster’s athleticism is his speed. On tape he does not appear to be very fast. Then, you see him glide past defenders with ease when the ball is in his hands. With a 4.52 40-yard dash, Foster is the fastest safety in the country. On the defensive side of the ball, his speed allows him to close in on ball carriers/wideouts quickly and stay in coverage, even when he is beat off the line of scrimmage.
Secondly, Foster has the second item that makes a good safety great: instincts. When you see a great safety play, it appears that they are always around the ball. When looking at Foster’s tape, I can’t help but notice his football IQ. Wherever the ball is on the field, Foster is always involved in the play. Oh, and he’s not afraid to hit you in the mouth. He may not be as violent of a hitter as DeMarvion Overshown, but will come downhill at full speed and punish someone if they aren’t careful.
It’s important to remember that Foster tore his ACL during the 2016 season. He has almost made a full recovery, and should be at full speed soon. We’re excited to follow B.J. throughout his senior season and hopeful he returns stronger than ever. If he does, there’s no reason to doubt he could become the next great safety at The University of Texas.
Final Verdict
B.J. Foster and Texas is a match made in heaven. Todd Orlando and Craig Naivar have to be giddy with excitement with how this defensive recruiting class is shaping up. With Foster in the mix, Naivar now has a true safety that can come in and compete for playing time immediately. Although B.J. is a quiet kid by nature, his play on the field speaks volumes. In his time at Texas, we expect more of the same. Overall, Tom Herman and Co. are producing a ridiculous 2018 class. Adding the No. 1 safety in the country to the mix only further proves that point. Foster is a special player, and we can’t wait to see what he does in the burnt orange on Saturday’s.
