have always liked and appreciated Simms. Never understood and was embarrassed by the hate.

Nice read. There is only one way to silence critics, and that is to win on the football field. If you don't win, that will create even more critics. And some people will never join the Charlie Strong bandwagon. Even if he wins it all. That's just the way it is. He should worry about the things he can control and forget about the other stuff.

I always felt the whole Simms at Texas saga was set in motion by Adam Dunn making his baseball choice.

The Simms-Applewhite story would have played very differently had he stayed, at least one more year, and if Brown would have left him at QB.

But Adam made the right choice for himself and it all means nothing now, except perhaps its place in the timeline of Brown's management of the program.

I thought Adam Dunn had already been moved to TE which made him choose baseball? Am I remembering incorrectly? Even if he had stayed around, he was a really, really big guy and I doubt would have played any QB.

I never got the Simms hate, either. He was one of us.

Sadly. . .Simms is a polarizing figure on the 40. . .a kid who left it all on the field yet is vilified still by many. . .think his take was pretty spot on. . .other than calling Texas the "south" . . .I don't think we are either "south" or "southwest". . .we are Texas. . .but then at the end of the day. . .Chris is still a yankee who bleeds burnt orange. ..

Yea , I read that yesterday and thought it was a good take. The part about Texas not getting good RB talent was nonsense, we got the #1 RB, two yrs running . But other than that I was in agreement with him

That comes from 2 things, imo

1 The conflict between fans over him and Major, really nothing to do with him

2 The perception of not being able to win big games against ouSuxx and specifically the CU-2 game in Dec 2001, I was at that one, heart breaking

This. Simms ended up being the scapegoat for Mack's mismanagement of the QB situation (which probably included a little input from his dad) and Greg Davis' inability to coach up QB's and his penchant for calling bubble screens that everyone knew was coming and almost guaranteeing a pick six.

Thats right, Dunn was '98 recruiting class.

He was then taken in 2nd round by Reds in the June '98 draft (signed that June), played in the minors in the summer (played in the OF btw)

Dunn was at QB but redshirted '98.

Simms was one of the bigger names of the '99 national class.

After that, Brown then said they were going to then move Dunn to TE.

I just think it could have been handled differently. And, if it had been, our view of Simms might be very different.

Simms is right on with Coach Strong. I am in the front seat with this bandwagon or SUV.

And Dunn throwing Chris under the bus saying he would have been a better QB.

That gets to the other part we dont know, will never know.

Even if Dunn had stayed and we never got divided into the Major-Chris camps -

the question still exists whether CS' qb play would have been any better (assuming he had the chance to RS for one year).

I have to blame MB for some of that (some people will never join the Charlie Strong bandwagon). MB did a good job of muding up the water before he left and some of those who will not accept CS feels we could have gotten a better coach.

I will support CS till he proves he can't win and as for MB I hope he keeps his ass out of Austin. My friends y'all have a great week.

Maybe we could have gotten a better coach, maybe a worse coach. Either way Strong is our coach now.

I'd take him in a Harsin offense, heck, Applewhite for that matter. Rod Babers on the 247 podcasts gave Simms and Redding credit for tuning the tide in recruiting.

Great take Jims. . ..I am reminded of some of those who never got on board with Mack. ..and really enjoyed the years when Mack hit the highest of highs . ..I wish I were a better person but I took a perverse pleasure in knowing many of those who hated Mack had to root against TEXAS. . .

There will be some who do that with Strong. .I feel sorry for them. . .he's the coach . ..and I think a good one. . .

I look forward to him re-establishing the standard (sadly not so long ago we were there). . .
