Being a car buff, I subscribe to the daily email from from Hemmings.com. ( http://www.hemmings.com )
Today they had an article about the Budweiser "Bevo Boat," a promotional vehicle built around 1913 as part of the advertising for Budweiser's prohibition era non-alcoholic beer "Bevo."
The original UT mascot was Pig Bellmont, an American Staffordshire terrier. ( http://jimnicar.com/ut-traditions/pig-bellmont/ ) On Thanksgiving day in 1916, Seven Pinckney, a 1911 UT Law graduate presented a longhorn steer to the alumni at halftime of the UT/aggy game and christened him "Bevo." Whether Pinckney originated the name or not is unknown. In reality, we have no idea how Bevo got his name. The Daily Texan from the following Friday is missing from the UT archives and remains one of the more sought after missing pieces of UT history. We do have the December 1916 issue of The Alcalde. Pig Bellmont was killed in an auto accident in 1923. In 1931, Bevo II became the first UT mascot named "Bevo."
With the passing of Bevo XIV, we will start the fall season with a new mascot and in celebration of the 100th anniversary of Bevo on the UT campus.
For those interested, the traditional home of the past few UT mascots has been the Sunrise Ranch in Liberty Hill. The Sunrise is a B&B in case anyone is heading to the Austin area and wants to stay outside the city.
