Ash or McCoy?

It looks like the Longhorns have entered into a new phase. Poor ineffective Garrett Gilbert has been, we can only hope forever, put on the bench. In comes David Ash and young McCoy and the next weeks we will get to see one win it the right way, on the field.

I listened to Mack after the game and he said Ash only had two plays and was hampered. Hampered or not he had 9 rushes for 39 yards and completed 2 of 3 passes for 35 yards..He made a few mistakes, mainly by not handing off on a zone read but he showed his talent by also catching a key pass from Jackson Shipley.

Case McCoy showed why he is my favorite by getting the ball to Jackson Shipley. It was obvious for all to see that the young tandem looked like clones of their older brothers. For the night Case completed 7 of 8 passes for 57 yards and a key fourth down completing.

Neither of the two had earth shattering stats but neither of them had a turnover either. It will probably next season or possibly the next before we get to the dominance we have seen in past. I for one enjoyed this win for something I haven't seen in a couple of seasons, a UT team come back from playing badly and winning a game. These two young QB's helped..

No poll but who do you thing will emerge from this competition?

I believe Mack will rotate both quarterbacks with McCoy getting the majority of the reps. That McCoy to Shipley combination is a winning one - has been for a number of years. But wow was David Ash fearless. No visible jitters and he stepped up and did a good job. I still have a hard time understanding why he put Gilbert BACK in after that horrible start.

This win was important because it was a game Texas would have lost last year. Coming from behind like that was a huge confidence builder going forward.

Malcolm Brown better be the starter next game. I am a Fozzy fan of big proportions but Brown is the real deal. Let's also not forget Cody Johnson's contributions last night.

If MB does not start at running back then MAck Brown is not as smart as I thought he was. And if Garret Gilbert ever plays another down this season (barring injuries from Ash and McCoy) then I will suggest a mutiny. Keep it moving.

Amen to that. I am pumped up about the UCLA game. I hate the state of California so I hope Texas unleashes on them. Malcolm Brown..,, meet California posers.

I listened to Mack's press conference this morning and i am optimistic Texas will be ready for UCLA on Saturday. The players are excited about playing in the Rose Bowl where they have enjoyed success. UCLA struggled against San Jose State last weekend but they will be game ready for the Horns. More David Ash and Chase McCoy, less GG. hookem

Mack has named Chase McCoy as the starting quarterback with David Ash as the backup. Also Malcolm Brown will start at running back. The fans have spoken and Mack has listened!

Personally, I love the new McCoy to Shipley connection. Give this two years to develop and you would swear its 2009 again.

I have been a fan of Foz as long as he has been a horn, but these last two games I have definately seen something in Malcolm Brown. MB just has that big play potential built into his running style.

As far as David Ash, the kid can flat out play. I feel that Mack needs to utilize both him and Case because they are different types of quarterbacks. If we can use both of them successfully it makes it twice as hard on opposing defenses because they have to prepare for our offense to be run two different ways. And i swear if Garrett Gilbert takes another snap this season I will personally fly to Austin and start a riot. Gilbert has had wayyyyyyy to many chances and done nothing with them.

On another note, I loved the way the Horns came out in the second half saturday night. If this was the 2010 team, there is no way we would have beaten BYU. Mack has done one heck of a job getting the guys refocused on what really matters... winning football games.

@tglick82 - Couldn't have been better said. I know Gilbert has had his chances but it is hard not to feel sorry for the guy. I watched this video of the team coming in the locker room after the game and notice Gilbert walking in at the 1:25 mark. Compare him to the guys that walked in first. Like I said I feel for the kid but this is big time football.

Damn that is cool seeing those guys all jacked up after the win. At least most of them. Let's kill UCLA!

I could not agree more. I mean I'm not gonna lie... what I saw out of GG in the title game when Colt went down was promising. He LED that team and even though they lost I could not have been more proud of the way they fought when everyone knew not having Colt was going to make it damn near impossible to win. But he never kept up that morale. After UCLA last year he just fell apart and clearly that carried over to this year. Texas football is about winning games. Period. Mack made the right call in bumping him out of the starting spot.

I am ecstatic about the potential McCoy has to offer but we need to keep in mind it is a young team with high expectations. This is a project - if he is not the savior this year we cannot get too upset. If that defense keeps playing balls out then we are going to have a chance in every game we play.

I missed the first half of the game but dvr'd it hoping to start it when I got home but when I saw Ash in for some plays and several McCoy to Shipley connections ala their older brothers, I decided to check in with bbdude to see what happened to GG. Based on his report I saw no need to review his awful play. Tough break for the kid. He had his opportunities to show what he could do, but just couldn't.
