It's certainly perplexing. Longhorn Scoop Twitter and NORTHTEXHORN at IT are both teasing a similarly shocking OC hire. Not really sure who it could be. Most top OC's either get noticed so easily that they get HC jobs almost immediately or are obviously tied to the genius of their HC (thus providing a pretty big caveat for potential employers, a la Tom Herman under Urban or Scott Frost under Kelly/Helfrich).

That's why Chad Morris's name gets thrown around by so many people — he's one of the very few OC's that is without a doubt solely responsible for his offense. That's the only guy I could really see it being...maybe Red came in and paid the buyout himself. Who knows.

Honestly, other than Morris, it's hard for me to even think of an OC hire that the entirety of UT fandom would get behind.

-Herman's under Meyer

-Frost has hardly any experience as an OC and isn't really thought of as one of the creators of Oregon's O

-Henson has only OC'd one season

-Montgomery is under Briles

-Lashlee's under Gus

-Norvell isn't overly well known

-Lincoln Riley is extremely young and at ECU

Seems like fans could find caveats for any of them except for Morris. Though people would probably just bitch about the fact that he's an Aggy.

People act like the buyout is a big deal because the BOR wouldn't approve it. Does anybody know whether UT athletics itself actually has to be the one to pay the buyout, or does the money just have to come from somebody on "behalf" of UT athletics? In the latter case, it doesn't seem necessary for the BOR to "approve" the buyout if it's not actually UT's money that would be spent.

If it is Morris, it will be interesting to see if we negotiated an even larger buyout.

While, in most circumstances, neither the HC nor the Athletic Department would want to stand in the way of an assistant's career advancement, this case is different. If we just paid a $5M buyout then we will want some assurance he would not leave after one season. Otherwise, we would have just paid for a new head coach for someone else.
