The DMN came up with a list of 5 players who could break out in 2014 http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/01/texas-longhorns-football-five-players-who-could-breakout-in-2014.html/

As well as 5 who exceeded expectations in 2013 http://collegesportsblog.dallasnews.com/2014/01/texas-longhorns-football-five-players-who-exceeded-expectations-in-2013.html/?nclick_check=1

5. Adrian Colbert: Mykkele Thompson started the entire season at free safety, but he often struggled to keep containment and read coverage. With a new defensive staff entering the fold it could create the opportunity for shakeup, which will help rising-sophomore Adrian Colbert greatly.
Colbert saw much of his time on special teams in 2013 and flashed well; he finished third on the team in special teams tackles.

Expect Colbert and Thompson to compete for the starting safety role in camp, and it wouldn’t shock to see Colbert win the job over Thompson.
Colbert has good size at 6'2, 200. He was was a 2012 3* -- Rivals had him at #41 in state. As a senior in high school (Mineral Wells) he had 90 tackles + 4 INTs in 9 games as at safety. He also had 576 rush yards (59 carries) + 28 receptions for 572 yards.

I hope the DMN got this one correct. I don't like berating our own players publicly but I would love to at least see some competition at this position -- preferably a new starter.

Hope so. ..think this new D would also fit his talents better too . ..

Hopefully Antwan Davis can see the field this year too. I have high hopes for him.

I think we'll see a lot of new faces all over the field. It's gonna be very different, hopefully in a good way.

These type of admissions lead me to believe we truly have been Camp Cupcake the last 16 years.

I think they should at least give Thompson a look on the offensive side of the ball.

That does bring up an advantage of holding Bonney if we can. Unlike Thompson, he will arrive on campus with some good DB experience. In his film, he shows both coverage and tackling skills. He already has good height at 6'1. He is not a 5* but he can be a solid player for us at a position of need.

Here is the IT write-up (link elsewhere)

40. John Bonney: Is he a corner? Is he a field safety? I don't know, and therein lies his value. Bonney's received a bad wrap from some Texas fans, and I must admit I wasn't always that high on him, but he had a strong senior season and as his body fills out I think he'll become a solid piece to a secondary. He won't lack for technical ability and he does have good length. Now the question remains will he end up at Texas or Baylor? Or what about Auburn?

Colbert was a stud track star at Mineral Wells also. He will get a lot of attention this season.

Where would you like to see him get a shot? WR, maybe? I know he was a QB in HS, but I think it would be unrealistic to ask him to try playing there, WR could fit, I read somewhere, I believe it was IT that he could actually be a better cb than safety.

WR would probably make the most sense I would think. Dude has great speed from what I've read. I think Akina worked him at CB some in spring ball last year if I'm mot mistaken.

If you read the first stuff when Bennie first arrived - same stuff.

Anytime new S&C guys comes in, the same stuff comes up. I remember when Greg Robinson first went to 'Cuse - a million stories of the same.

Conditioning has never been a problem in the last 16 years.

Would be great to see the new faces and it would be different........football would be fun to watch.
