Arizona to introduce ‘new tradition’ for football games
Arizona Wildcats athletic director Greg Byrne wants fans to sway right before kickoff at home football games.
It’s something he and select members of the department — called the Arizona Creative Team — want to introduce as something Byrne calls a "new tradition" at UA.
Arizona officials tested the idea with the Zona Zoo student section in the opener against UNLV on Aug. 29, but they want to go stadium-wide Saturday night against Nevada.
"Basically," he told 1290-AM (KCUB) on Tuesday afternoon, "right after the coin flip we’re going to start an opportunity for our fans to kind of get right next to each other, put your arm over the shoulder of the person next to you and sway back and forth. And during that time, we’re going to say, ‘Zo-na, ‘Zo-na.’
"There are two other programs in the country that we know off that do something along those lines. One of those is Texas A&M … during their fight song."
That is an Aggies pregame tradition in which the interlocked, swaying crowd creates a back-and-forth motion that symbolically "saws off" the horns of the Texas mascot, Bevo. Byrne’s father, Bill Byrne, is a former athletic director at Texas A&M.
"I’m not trying to name drop, but I’m going to name drop anyways," Greg Byrne said.
"When my dad was AD there, President Bush Sr. and Mrs. Bush would often sit up in their box. And I actually sawed Bevo’s horns off with President Bush once. It doesn’t matter who you are — even a former president of the United States — it’s something everybody can do together."
