Saban is TEXAS big. We are the Jones. The entire world laughed at us, and look what we went and did. We pulled NS out of the best collection of talent in the SEC. Finebaum sucks. Bammers are crazy.
In other words, this isn't as much about NS as it is about our opinion and perspective of ourselves. I think we want NS because of how it vaults us back into the spotlight. We WANT to be that big and important in the CFB world. We were relevant for a few years there, but aren't so much any more. We get to buy our way back in. The ego of We're Texas will live again.
Btw, it's the same ego that that drives The Chin to get his players into a frenzy to play us....or the realignment fiasco that put us in the crappiest conference for the next 73 years so that 7% of our fans can watch three games a year on the LHN.
The other choice, be it Strong or someone else, to me anyway, represents working for it. Buckle up and out work the other guy. Reminds me a little of taking the three star QB and making a championship team out of players who want it more and are willing to spill a little blood to make it happen. As good a Saban may be, and I think he is the best in CFB, is he the best for US? Right now? I'm not sure. The more I think about it, the more I want the underdog. The more I want our ego bruised a bit. Maybe the We're Texas should mean we work harder than you. Not that we have more money and more resources and therefore we are better than you. Isn't that the mindset that got us here?
I don't know who will be the coach. I just know that most of us who have our favorites, have them as favorites because of how we view our place in the CFB world. what we deserve and who is a big enough splash to satisfy us...etc. maybe we ought to hire a coach who is willing to set aside arrogance and entitlement and simply work harder and smarter than the other guy?
No matter what, when I look in the mirror of our fanbase this week, I see an awful lot of arrogance and entitlement. I hope we find a way to shed ourselves of that mindset.
Again, I don't know who we hire. I know only one thing, I will cheer loudly for the kids on the field.
