8-4 is what I'm still looking for

Prior to the season, I was hoping and rooting for an 8-4 season for these Longhorns. After last night, I'm still looking for that. I thought they might have a chance for 9-3 after the ND game, but I was brought back to reality that we have a young team with a Freshman QB. Don't get me wrong, I hate my teams losing to inferior teams, but it happens. I honestly think we will split with the Oklahoma schools, lose to Texas Tech in Lubbock, and drop another to either Baylor or Kansas State

That gets us to 8-4 and hopefully they learned a lot from this season. I'm staying with this and will not get caught up in hype again this season. Next season is a different story.

I think it's reasonable in year 3 to expect the head coach at Texas to equal the record that got his predecessor fired.

I'm emboldened knowing Charlie has left the offense to Gilbert and now has more time to work with the D and focus on clock management .

If he is just now working with the D then eight and four is not only our ceiling for this year but forever more.

In my opinion, this is still a ten win team. Partially because I think the team will improve as the season goes on but also because our conference is weak this year. I think we're all (understandably) really down over the Cal game. Thus we're all slipping right back into our pessimism. But I still think this is a really good football team. As I said last year, if Charlie can't get eight wins this year, I think it will be time to look elsewhere. Lock down Herman before he leaves for an LSU or A&M.

We are good enough to win out if we make a big change with our defense. I am not taking this stance just because of the Cal game, it wasnt impressive leading up to that game.

Aside from any pessimism, there are some realities that just can't continue to be ignored.

Charlie Strong does not do a good job of evaluating whether the team is well prepared for a game. I honestly believe Charlie was stunned that the secondary was wholly unprepared to play against Cal. Yet, from the first series, it was painfully obvious not one of the secondary players on the roster had a clue what the scheme was or where they were supposed to be on the field. This team is so far from "DBU" it is embarrassing.

Special teams has always been a weakness under Charlie Strong. And they will.probably always be a weakness under Charlie Strong.

Most troubling, Charlie has little, if any, ability to evaluate the performance of position coaches or coordinators. It is not until a major failure that a light goes on in Charlie's head that a problem exists. Good coaches don't let major weaknesses fester for months and only belatedly begin to react to assess a problem that will take months to correct. Charlie should have known in August that his secondary coaches weren't getting through to the players.

It is well into year three of the Charlie Strong era and we are still shaking our heads over fundamental problems concerning how the program is being managed. It is a bit optimistic to believe Charlie will only get out coached three more times this year after the way Sonny Dykes out coached him Saturday night.

I think Cal is a comparable team to OSU and Tech.

This does not bode well for the Big 12 schedule if our Back 7 can't get their personnel and coverage schemes straightened out. We should have physically manhandled that team and won comfortably. The defense - Charlie's specialty? - clearly held us back.

Based on what we've seen so far this is what I'm thinking. 

Kansas is a sure win. 

Iowa State is a highly likely win. Of course, I said that last year as well. 

Kansas State is a likely win but not a certain win due to it being a road game.

The other 6 games are all tossups. Could win just as easy as we could lose. 

Still think OU is the best of those 6 considering their 2 losses are to top 5 teams.

Could win as few as 5 more games or as many as 7.  

And as I've said before, I reserve the right to change my mind on a moment's notice.

7-5 is a reasonable prediction at this point.  I don't know what kind of changes 7-5 would activate?

If you are correct (and I believe you are), then the logical next question would be, "why the disparity in standards?" 

This would be 3 years without yet equaling the record Mack Brown recorded the year he got fired.

Charlie is back as long as he goes at least 6-6 and gets in a bowl. The only way he gets fired is with a losing season and even then it won't be as automatic as you think it should be.
