If I had to guess, his NIL ask was higher than the staff put the value at. I think rb is one of the easier positions to get good/great portal value, and the staff feels they can upgrade at a discount. Definitely need at least two rb’s now

How many of you would think you could achieve half as much and get paid twiice as much for iit?

Based on that information, assuming OTF data is correct (not doubting them), this implies there are deeper issues. One doesn't just behave like that if they are happy in their situation. I'm not implying there is a guilty side - he or team or both. I suspect there is more to this than what OTF is reporting or BEEN TOLD.

The old days of coaches' 'my way or the highway' has changed 180 degrees.

Perhaps there are other issues. Regardless he didn't feel comfortable enough, based on OTF post, to even discuss it. Perhaps it is agent and family. Perhaps he didn't feel appreciated for whatever reason. It is interesting that other backs are leaving. Is that a coincidence or are there are other issues?

If it is money, my hat is off to Sark. Take the leverage away. If the player is not happy or wants more to play for what was agreed to, then he won't fit in as a team player, regardless how talented he is. Football, as we all know, transcends on and off the field. Wish him well and move on.

It may put the team in a bad spot, but it's hard to imagine it being a good strategy.

If true, it's a bit of a stain on his shine, so likely causes his market value to drop.

It's also unlikely to be successful, since it would be a terrible precedent. It also makes a return unlikely, even if the Texas offer turn out to be his best option

One thing these players should consider is what happened to Nico Iamaleava last year. He overplayed his hand, and it was disastrous.

FWIW....I disagree that the schools do not show loyalty. The nature of the game is if someone does better than you, they will start ahead of you......that is not being disloyal.

Pretty good article on X(twitter). I think this applies to both basketball and football, as well as the other sports but not as much.


If you want stay in step as a college coach in the “new normal,” you will need to conform to survive:

1. Academic requirements & graduate rates mean nothing to most families of star athletes. It’s about the money.

2. Accept that agents now run college basketball. And, unlike NBA certified agents, many are clueless at best & shysters at worst. Still have to deal with them.

3. Evaluation of high school & transfer portal talent is at all-time low. These decisions are torpedoing even great programs. So hire people who know hoops.

4. You have to be willing to cut players who can’t play. Do you want to feed their family or your family?

5. Cultivate “sugar daddies” for your program. But don’t have them paying for bad evaluations. These are smart business people. You’ll be cooked.

6. Hire an NBA guy that knows the international market (most of you already behind) or G League talent.

7. Study new world of NIL insurance so you are protected against liability when the athlete sues. You’ll also need to determine how to claw back funds when player is injured for extended period of time.

8. Don’t worry about tampering. That’s out the window too.

Understand that, while some say college basketball is at it best right now, there will be unintended consequences. Some of it is good, some bad & much, an overcorrection. Anyone who thinks they know where this ends, especially with non-existent leadership at the top of the sport, is a fool.

same with Ricky Williams. It was a major feat for Mack Brown to convince Ricky to stay for his senior season.
