2024 Baseball Season Thread

So, 1 commit was drafted in the 14th rd as was Tanner Witt. I would guess that the commit has a better NIL than what he could get in the 14th rd and the same goes with Witt. But could be wrong.
I learned something today, after the 10th round there is no slotted value and the bonuses given have no impact on the bonus pool for that team.

The last pick of the 10th rd has a value of about 175,000.

Does Texas have that, or close to it, for Witt? With a good, healthy year he could get drafted higher, though he would have no leverage to negotiate his bonus.

For the commit the calculus is a bit different. For starters, Texas NIL really has 3 years to make up for the signing bonus via NIL. After receiving this signing bonus, the player would be receiving a minor league salary, between 25-35k a year from single A up to AAA. So if NIL looks better than the signing bonus, I'd argue the scholarship, room and board at Texas sounds better than a 25K salary. And for a commit, they can play their 3 years and then re-enter the draft with the bargaining chip of returning to school remaining.

This is a good breakdown of the offseason changes.

And a link to the 2024 class.

and a rankings list of the college players but only the top 10 players are veiwable unless you create an account (there is a free option)
Awesome! Thank you!!

Well, should he return? Yes. Would he? That probably depends upon what the new staff has told him about where they see using him and helping with correcting any techniques. Is he comfortable with the new staff?
As far as the NIL, I have no idea what he is slotted for making this past season and for this upcoming season. If he liked what the staff told him and the NIL verses the slotted amount from the Rockies isn't a difference maker, he may decide to comeback. Other points of interest that LBJ has to consider is A ball better than college baseball? Not certain about crowd size of playing in front of matters to him, but some of the SEC games might be in front of larger crowds than what goes to A ball.

The pitching coach came with Schloss. He is a supposed stud, came from Mariners system to A&M. They call him the "Arm Farm".

Question for LBJ would be do Schloss and Co see him as a guy they can develop and fix his issues from the past season in a way that drastically raises his stock going into next years draft. The 5th rd spot he got picked in was a pretty good result for him but he pitched much better 2 years ago than he did last year.
I guess I got him confused with the hitting coach that returned to aggy.

Considering the injury status of Witt my opinion is to come back and see if Weiner can get him to where he is drafted high enough to be slotted.

We have added 2 more pitchers via portal in

Grayson Saunier (Ole Miss)
Conner McCreery ( South Carolina)

Not certain that I've seen anything on Andre Duplantier. Not certain what Witt's father meant, but he put something out in X or one of the social media things, about a fresh start. Does he mean fresh start with the Mets or new pitching coach.

What do we know about Saunier and McCreery?

There is a good write up on Saunier on horns247 front page down near the bottom of the page. He is probably a middle reliever that can be groomed into a starter. He was a starter at Ole Miss, but he only got to the 5th inning about 8 times and to the 6th closer to 4 times. So, needs to be able to show some ability to go thru the line up more than once to be considered a starter, at least IMO.

McCreery is more of the 7th/8th inning guy that has a really nice fastball, but a fairly nasty slider. Go to OTF and the free part has some videos from CJ on him. He could be a closer if the staff likes his stuff. But I will leave that up to the new staff. They seem to know how to build a team, but now they just have to develop them and see if these coaches get better results than Pierce.

So, saw a Jeff Howe has a really good write up on the free side. Both Spencer and Trop, drafted in the 14th rd by the Phillies, have until August 1st to sign any contract. If they don't sign then both will be nice additions to the bullpen.

We also added a junior college 1st baseman in Jaquae Stewart on Monday. Stewart hit .346 with 16 hrs, 47 doubles, and 61 walks; while only striking out 46 times.

So, until we hear who has signed they have until August 1st at 4:00PM, guessing that is EST, but not for certain.

Do we know if LBJ or Andre Duplantier II has signed? I'd love to see both back next year.
