The portal is a cancer on college football. Paying players is also. This patient may not survive in tact.
It may be a cancer on college football but it’s good for the players. If paid.. They get compensated for a billion dollar industry they provide a key service too. And the portal allows them the same freedom as coaches. It’s good to allow these workers to get fair treatment.

Totally disagree. A scholarship is valuable enough. Wait until the rosters are impossible for fans to form relationships with. Fans will stay away. Just ask the millions who have stopped watching the nfl. As a matter of fact what you are suggesting is collegiate sports socialism.

If UT played in Cedar Park's HS stadium, would people care as much? If UT didn't spend millions promoting itself, would anybody think of UT the same?

I could go on and on but the point is – the stage that these kids get to star on is paid for by the institution (and people of Texas). All of this is made possible by UT and the people of Texas.

Secondly, hornsup is right on paper but wrong in application. Sure, we'd all love to think this is fair. But would it be beneficial to a young man at that point in his career anyway? When I was that age, I had a friend whose father passed. He inherited a bunch of money. He went out on a spending spree, got into drugs, and today lives on the street.

So it's not as simple as paying a kid for fair treatment. We're making the wrong move here and college football as we know it will be gone.

An education at UT isn't worth just what the price tag says when you pay tuition. A UT education will pay dividends the rest of your life. How do you put a price tag on that?

But football still brings in plenty of many. And some could argue that UT being good at football helps with enrollment numbers. Those enrollment numbers help sell the school. It’s not one or the other. It’s not black & white.

Also, I don’t want to hold everyone to the idea that they aren’t able to make the right decisions because we know people who don’t. But hey I wouldn’t be against putting their earnings in a trust until after they graduate.

A degree at UT can pay dividends for your life but these players are also putting their bodies on the line way more than the average student. Sure they eat better and get perks. But they also sacrifice years of health & the time it takes to be a student. With practice, weights, off season drills, etc. No doubt it’s a complicated situation but I question anyone who thinks the players shouldn’t be compensated in someway. Especially when you see what these coaches make. Oh and those coaches kids get perks from universities as well.

1. Why would you throw money at a kid because a lot of people in Texas come to see the Horns play? People here love football.

2. UT doesn't need help with enrollment. They turn more people away each year than any other school in the state. Those enrollment numbers also discourage people from coming to UT. See Marcus Burris, Pleasant Grove.

3. I think you're on the right path with the trust idea. At least until they exit school.

4. They would put their bodies on the line at Angelo State. But I promise you, nobody at Angelo is going to get a check from their use of likeness. Texas sets the stage.

5. What you call sacrifice others call "the path to the NFL" where they will get millions. Again, Texas has that stage to do that.

6. Perhaps part of their education will get paid for by their earnings? Oh wait, that already happens.

UT football helps with getting people from out of state to come. Trust me I know this. A lot of my really good friends from my time at UT were from out of state. And this was at a time we were good at football. It played a part. If they are good, they aren’t going to Angelo State. And those going to Angelo State could still make money using their likeness in local ads. They could still make money. What I call sacrifice is just that. You have to know that most of these players aren’t making it to the league. And if they do it’s practice squad or out of the league in 2 years. It’s funny people love talking about their education being paid for. Those scholarships can be pulled at anytime. And there are plenty of kids at universities on scholarships, they don’t have to wake up at 5 in the morning. They get to have their summers to themselves. They don’t have to miss time with family doing holidays. They don’t get steered into crap majors to ensure an easier courses.

I understand, but we're not required to recruit out of state. We can get by on Texas talent if we have to.

Incorrect on the Angelo State thing. Local papers and broadcasters are trying to survive as it is. They're not going to pay for a player to be on an ad. They will use a cheerleader or something else related but doesn't cost them money.

NONE of those players will get to the league if they're not lifting weights and being conditioned (by a coach, no less). They all have a dream of being able to make millions playing a friggin game.

Band members get up at 5 am. Shall we throw money at them because of that? lol

Poor football players, not having their summers to themselves. lol Nobody FORCES them to do this. They do this to make themselves better. Its an investment in themselves. They want to start. They want to score more or make more tackles. They want to be the best they can be and hopefully, that translates to the NFL when its all said and done. But without it, no NFL.

Thats their choice to make.

Wow so you’re harping on Angelo State. The point was an overall point that even at smaller universities the players could make money off their likeness. And that is too BS that none of these players could make it to the league without a college. You really think Bijan Robinson or Bryce Love couldn’t skip college. Get an agent who pays for a position coach, a trainer, and a nutritionist? That if they did that the a NFL team wouldn’t draft them?

Really band wakes up at 5am? That’s all you have? Band may wake up at 5am but 100,000 people aren’t coming to see them. They aren’t selling many band shirts at the Co-Op. That’s a weak argument. I had to wake up early to student but I do t think I deserve to be compensated for it. It’s about what they bring into the university as well.

Nobody forced them to practice except when they don’t they can lose a position or maybe their spot on a team. Or they may have to transfer but then you guys want to restrict their ability to do that as well. So these players, mostly minority players, have to work extra hard to stay in school that some may not be able to afford without that scholarship. They have to perform in the class and on the field to stay. They can’t work for extra money but see an university making so much off of their work. Oh and they have to do all of that when maybe their mother is struggling at home. Yeah tell me how they aren’t FORCED to do more. But it’s their fault for wanting more. I’m done with this ridiculous conversation. It’s time go watch my boy Luka kill the spurs.

If the point was weak, you wouldn't have had to change your point. You said nothing about 100K folks. You said because they get up at 5 am they should get paid. Thats not only weak, its pretty funny. My deer hunting buddies want some back pay. lol

This is our third exchange. Your best stuff was delivered at the front end so this becomes less interesting with every post. I've made my point and I'm comfortable with it.

Dude my point isn’t changing. You brought up the band to make some point. I just countered that fallacy with a fact that 100,000 people are out there to see the band. So why try to equate the two? Especially since I didn’t just say 5am, I pointed to other things and you tried to use that one 5am statement to try to make your point.

Sorry don’t get the deer buddies comment. That’s a two America’s one for you.

Sorry I didn’t post to entertain you or keep your interest. I’m not some student athlete you know. I’m just killing time right now. I could care less if you respond or are interested. I didn’t rate any of your “stuff” so I can’t say when you had your best. Sorry again. I’ve made my point and I’m more than comfortable with it.

I sure hope your day gets better. You're free to think what you want.

My day has been pretty good. And I’m in the AAC waiting the man Luka to do his thing. So it will only get better. Same for you though.
Well, I won't get to see Luka this evening like you but I did just have dinner with my bride. :)

I heard Luka was sleeping with the fishes....
