2019 Recruiting Board/Thread

Thanks Daniel for keeping us amateurs updated.

I just took a look at last 2 years OT recruits with Shepard's commit.  Will say that for the first time in a long time I'm feeling good about our future at OT and the depth they are building.  Looking forward to the great O-Line class in 2020 and hope Evans notices as well!

Are all the 2018 OT recruits still on the team?

At quick glance here's our 2018 & 2019 OT recruits

I'll preface this by saying I'm going to remain professional in all of my answers in this thread.

All I know is Arkansas woke up this morning still thinking he was in the bag, and to their credit, he was. What you may have heard about him coming to visit and checking out apartments on Sunday is true. He was coming to Arkansas, the story was written, it was a done deal.

Evidently, Ole Miss got to his mother last night and did a great job of convincing her that Oxford was the best place for Lakia. I'm told she drove through the night to get to Dodge City today, and the rest is pretty much history. I'll leave it all up for interpretation from there because I honestly don't have all the facts, but I do know Ole Miss did a good job of winning over Lakia's mother.

Just being frank here, this one wasn't even close guys. He was a Hog. It was a done deal -- until it wasn't. I've seen some dandies but this one might take the cake. I'm not sure "surprised" is the word I'd use for how Arkansas feels about it. I don't think they're even that "surprised" by this, but they sure thought they had their guy.

That's recruiting, especially in the SEC.

Ole Miss with ZFG
Thats crazy wild. $ounds like Ole Miss had a great two-minute offense.

10 Big-Name Recruits Who Screwed Up Most in 2019 Signing Window

S Chris Adimora, Texas

1 OF 10

Credit: 247Sports

Based on how Texas head coach Tom Herman and defensive coordinator Todd Orlando recruited defensive backs in 2019, it appears as though they aren't happy with their current depth chart.

During a resurgent 2018 season that put the program back on the map, the Longhorns ranked 110th nationally against the pass. But despite that horrific number, the 'Horns are improving at the position, and few other schools in the country have stockpiled as much talent at safety as Texas.

Last year, they secured B.J. Foster and Caden Sterns, two potential All-Americans who played as true freshmen and were dominant at times. With Brandon Jones and Chris Brown back as well, that's a loaded group.

Incoming 4-star safety Tyler Owens is elite, and the speedy star should hop on the field right away. It's enough depth to make the 'Horns move DeMarvion Overshown to outside linebacker.

So, where does that leave Chris Adimora?

The 6'1½", 192-pound safety had plenty of offers and was the 190th-ranked player in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. However, his path to playing time at Texas is blocked, and it doesn't look like it's getting less clogged anytime soon.

Though Kenyatta Watson looks like a cornerback, he could also jostle for time at safety.

Will Adimora compete and be content if he has to wait for a starting role? Sterns, Foster and Owens are too talented to keep off the field. It'll be interesting to see where Adimora fits

This is a case of a writer waking up and saying "I have nothing to write about today." So they twist, turn, bend and come up with the above.

Kenyatta Watson is an elite corner with the size you drool over at CB. Why would you move him from a place thats not crowded, to another position where he causes it to be crowded? Only a writer with no story even talks about this.

Adimora is an elite ATHLETE. He can play multiple positions on defense and offense, as well as return kicks/punts. Adimora looks up to nobody in this recruiting class.

Jones will leave after next season. Sterns probably follows him. Chris Brown has never really been a factor, just used as depth.

So that leaves us where we started. Adimora and Owens as our safety recruits in this class. An injury here or there and either could play in their freshman and sophomore seasons.

Who is our back up center next season?

Do we have any interior linemen in these classes?  I’m thinking Angilau and maybe Ghirmai move to guard?

i bet arky was "blind sided"

Remember when nothing happened to them last time? NCAA gives zero shits....
Well, take one look at Baylor. The legal investigation was almost over before the NCAA awoke from slumber to show interest. That investigation still isn't finished.

NCAA did punish Ole Miss last time. Took away schollies, bowl eligibility, and OVs and limited recruiting trips.

They survived it, obviously, but they went from SEC contender who beat Bama more than not, to finding their seat in the back of the pack.

I see what you did there.

Rafiti Ghirmai is getting snaps at center, per TFB.

Edit: Also, it sounds like Angilau is taking snaps at guard.

I thought I had read somewhere that Kerstetter was going to get some work there as well.

I was impressed by the lack of offensive holding calls by Shack after his return from injury last season.
Shack looked a lot better after his injury. He wasn't having the same snap issues that had plagued him in 2016 and 2017, and he had a lot fewer holding calls, like you said. Apart from the KSU game where he had 2 really dumb penalties, I was pretty happy with his play in 2018.

I agree.  Toward the end of the year (after his return) Shack played great!  His snaps were even better.

Edit - I subsequently read what ut040713 wrote.... great minds.

Coaches seem to love Shack.  I think he plays with a nasty edge that they appreciate.    I always wondered why they left him at center when every snap was an adventure.   But last year he seemed to correct it and play great for the most part (Herb Hand??)

With nearly the entire 2019 recruiting class already signed, it was a quiet, uneventful national signing day for Texas coach Tom Herman and the Longhorns on Wednesday morning. Four-star Houston North Forest offensive tackle Javonne Shepherd was the only player to sign with the Longhorns. Texas currently has the No. 3 class in the nation and the No. 1 class in the Big 12, per 247Sports.

Here is a quick breakdown of the Longhorns' class:

Head of the class: Bru McCoy, ATH

Wasn't it obvious? McCoy, a five-star prospect from Santa Ana Mater Dei (Calif.), is the No. 1-ranked athlete in the country, a dynamite playmaker and can play both ways (wide receiver and outside linebacker). His late addition to the class after transferring from USC, only a couple weeks after enrolling early there, certainly drew plenty of buzz, and many are calling him a can't-miss prospect. He could play in 2019 if the NCAA grants him a waiver. Considering his situation, this was one of the biggest recruiting steals in recent history.

Diamond in the rough: Marcus Washington, WR

It's unusual that the Longhorns went into Missouri to recruit a wide receiver, but there's a reason for it: Washington is talented, has a lot of upside and he can go up and get the football. The 6-foot-2, 191-pound four-star prospect is flying under the radar in this class due to the Longhorns adding four other receiver prospects in McCoy, Jordan Whittington, Jake Smith and Kennedy Lewis -- the first three of which have hogged a lot of the attention. But watch out for Washington to make an impact over time.

Immediate-impact player: Jacoby Jones, DE

With all three starters on the defensive line from 2018 -- Charles Omenihu, Breckyn Hager and Chris Nelson -- graduating, and with the experience he already has at the JUCO level (Butler Community College), Jones has a chance to see plenty of playing time early. Jones is the No. 1-ranked JUCO strong-side defensive end in the nation, per 247Sports, and he's yet another JUCO transfer from Kansas for Herman (former linebacker Gary Johnson hailed from Dodge City Community College). Jones will need to add a little more weight but he has a solid frame right now at 6-4, 250 pounds, and he's the most ready to play out of all the defensive line recruits in this class.

Biggest need metDefensive line, linebacker, offensive line

Along with Jones, Texas added three other players along the defensive line -- an area that clearly needed some more depth. Elsewhere upfront, the Longhorns also needed some help at linebacker, especially with starters Gary Johnson and Anthony Wheeler graduating and starter Jeffrey McCulloch having only one more season left. Texas signed four linebackers in this class, including the highly touted De'Gabriel Floyd, the No. 3 inside linebacker in the nation, and JUCO transfer Caleb Johnson. Many of the players the Longhorns signed at defensive line and linebacker should be competing for playing time early. On top of all that, Texas added three more offensive linemen to the class after losing three starters from 2018.

Biggest need not addressedRunning back

Herman made it clear back during his early signing period press conference that running back and offensive line were the two biggest priorities for the Longhorns moving forward. Texas added four-star tackle Isaiah Hookfin two days later and four-star tackle Javonne Shepherd on Wednesday afternoon, giving the class three offensive linemen total. But the class still only has one running back in four-star Derrian Brown, who was recently hospitalized with an undisclosed medical issue. After missing on a pair of five-star backs in Trey Sanders and Noah Cain in December, the Longhorns could have really used another ball-carrier in this class, especially with multiple members of the backfield already departing.

Grade: A

Landing the nation's top two athletes in McCoy and Whittington -- both five-star players -- plus Smith, the Gatorade National Player of the Year, is already noteworthy enough. But the added depth at other key positions, including defensive line, linebacker, the secondary, wide receiver, tight end, a few more bodies on the offensive line and another quarterback, is what also makes this class a near home run. It's Herman's second consecutive top-three recruiting class -- the first time that's happened in program history -- as the Longhorns build on their offseason momentum that started with the Sugar Bowl victory.
