When it comes to college recruiting, its so easy to be wrong about a guy. As good as we have been when it comes to recruiting on paper, it is a completely different story when you put those guys on the field. A lot of our young guys struggled and were hit with a sophomore slump. Herman and Strong both showed that they could win with mediocre to above average talent at UH and Louisville. I'm curious to see what Herman does with a "supposedly" more talented roster. The same talented roster that Charlie failed to take to the next level...

I think if you were expecting a top ten recruiting class under the circumstances Coach Herman is faced with; the problem is unrealistic expectations rather than his ability to recruit.
Sometimes excuses / explanations are valid; and sometimes criticisms are not. We would all love a class full of 5 star athletes; but that was highly unlikely no matter who was hired.
Two further parting points:
> Coach Herman has not made one "excuse".
> Herman's UH team, full of 2 and 3 star athletes would have beaten UT last year by a comfortable margin. His primary responsibility is to win games and not to recruit 4 and 5 star kids. Recruiting is just one of many means to that end; ponder that.

I've said it multiple times. Herman has done an outstanding job with this class. He had to build multiple relationships out of thin air. More importantly - it's about the product on the field. If that aspect is taken care of, recruiting takes care of itself.
If we land a top 20 recruiting class, I'll be tickled, because we certainly haven't sniffed top 20 as a program in a long time. It goes hand-in-hand, which we all know. I've said more than once I don't have confidence we sign Chaisson, but if we do, that would send a jolt of confidence through the entire program. Same thing with an Omar Manning or another unexpected recruit. I'm not concerned about OL because we have 2 high-ranking guys who redshirted last year in the Baylor takeover to go with the already great young talent on hand. After we win 10 games in 2017 and kick the crap outta USC (that's right, I said it), we won't be having these "will he, or won't he" conversations. Our coaches will be making those decisions again.

Good to know he's still developing physically. He already has some size. Think of what a college conditioning program can do for him.
I'm just so ready for the games to start and actually see what this team can do. Talent is clearly there so now it's just about performance.
I get the whole first year thing but there is no reason this team l with these players can't be competing for the big 12.

I was responding to some posters before me, not Coach Herman. The truth is our fan base expected Herman to do better than Charlie Strong with much more time and many more Texas connects and if (still an IF btw) he doesn't even have as good a class as Charlie's first class (again with CS having much less time and connections) we should just admit that it is a big fat disappointment. As for me, I still have confidence in Herman as a coach and that no matter what happens with this class, wins will make a big difference next year.

I was in Austin today and met my buddy for lunch. We spent most of our time catching up, but did get in a few minutes of Longhorn stuff.
The only thing, recruiting-wise, that I asked him about was the recruitment of Chaisson. I shared with him the recent doubts and possibilities of ending up at LSU. He wasn't worried.
"The relationship is there and it's as good as it can be," he said. "He's taking his visits, taking it all in. Having himself a good time. But in the end, he'll be at UT."
He said don't be surprised at Chaisson being impressed with a visit like Florida, coming up. "How can you not be impressed with a place like U of F? He'll love it. He loved LSU. And he loved Texas. Texas is where momma wants him and where he's felt comfortable with all along."
It was good seeing him. I probably won't see him again for a while. But we'll be in touch by phone here and there.

K’Lavon Chaisson: Texas hosted what could be their crown jewel in the 2017 class in 5-star OLB/DE K’Lavon Chaisson. I felt Texas had the edge going into the weekend and I still feel that way today. Multiple family members joined Chaisson on the visit, but none were more important than his mother who I was told is a major factor in his decision.
One little thing I found interesting was that 13-year NFL vet and former Texas DL who went to the same high school as Chaisson in Cory Redding was in Austin over the weekend and was around the facilities. I’m sure that wasn’t just a coincidence on the part of Redding and Tom Herman.
Chaisson will take a mid-week visit to Colorado starting today or tomorrow, and plans to visit USC over the weekend. Though I was told it wouldn’t be surprising to see him not end up going to USC over the weekend. This is still a Texas-LSU battle even with the other visits. – (Andrew)
