A way-too-early look at Texas Longhorns recruiting for 2017: Commits, targets and needs

The Longhorns finished their 2016 recruiting strong as they made a huge jump during national signing day. Texas finished with the No. 11 recruiting class according to 247Sports’ composite rankings.
With the 2016 recruiting class in the books, here’s a way-too-early look at Texas recruiting for 2017:
Who’s committed?
The Longhorns currently have four commitments in the 2017 class: four-star defensive end Lagaryonn Carson, four-star quarterback Sam Ehlinger, four-star wide receiver Damion Miller and three-star tight end Major Tennison.
Carson, a 6-foot-4, 260-pound Texarkana native, is the No. 2 defensive end in the country and No. 66 overall recruit in the nation according to 247Sports.
Ehlinger is rated as the nation’s No. 4 rated dual-threat quarterback and is the No. 80 overall rated recruit in U.S. The Westlake native was named the Texas AP Player of the Year after leading Austin Westlake to the UIL 6A Division I State Championship. Ehlinger plans to enroll early.
Miller, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound receiver from Tyler, is the No. 22 ranked receiver in the nation and the No. 486 overall recruit.
Tennison, a 6-foot-6, 245-pound tight end from Bullard, checks in as the nation’s No. 15 overall tight end.
Which Texas targets to watch?
The Longhorns have offered 43 2017 recruits. These are a couple of highly-touted names to watch as Texas begins the 2017 cycle:
Four-star running back J.K Dobbins will be one to keep track of. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound all-purpose back from La Grange recorded over 2,700 rushing yards during his junior season. He holds offers from Baylor, Oklahoma, Stanford and TCU among others.
Four-star wide receiver Camron Buckley. The Longhorns currently have one wide out committed in the 2017 class but Buckley would make a solid addition. He recorded 430 receiving yards and seven touchdowns during his junior season with Cedar Hill.
Five-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson will be one to watch in the 2017 class. He’s the No. 1 ranked defensive tackle in the country and No. 4 overall recruit.
Five-star Dylan Moses, five-star Baron Browning, four-star Levi Jones and four-star Anthony Hines will be four linebackers to keep an eye on during this year’s recruiting cycle.

2017 Needs
Quarterback. The Longhorns will lose junior Tyrone Swoopes at the end of the season but already have the position filled with Ehlinger’s commitment.
Offense and defensive line. Head coach Charlie Strong has made it clear that he’d like to constantly recruit on each side of the line. Texas will look to add to a strong 2016 line class during this cycle.
Linebacker. The Longhorns have solid depth at the position but will lose two linebackers at the end of the 2016 season. Texas will have to replace them.
Safety. The team will lose a couple of safeties after next season and will have to recruit at the position during this cycle even though it has young talent at the position.
Will the trend continue?
Strong and his staff have recruited very slowly compared to other schools as they wait to offer and heavily-recruit near the end of the cycle.
It’s unlikely that Strong will change his recruiting method. Texas will likely be in the hunt for its targets late into the recruiting process.

Two posts on OB are saying Baron Browning is Horn. Not sure I believe it, but supposedly his Twitter is saying Let's Ride. Anybody else hear anything on it? That would be huge if true.

Well that's nice. Doesn't mean he is committed though. He probably just re-tweeted a picture someone made for him. Still, it would be nice if he committed.
I agree with you. I also watched his periscope video in the Jr Day thread, he seemed to be enjoying himself.

I'm crossing my fingers. It would be nice to have the bell cows Carson, Browning, and Ehlinger in the fold to help attract others. We got 2. Browning would be huge get.

Agree, and it looks good for the good guys with him.

Marvin Wilson is the one I want the most. Gotta have him. Just 'cause.

Per Chip:

"5-star LB Anthony Hines said the highlight of his Junior Day was Texas' hoops win over OU.

"That was incredible," Hines said. "Loudest game I've ever been in."

Hines already has 84 offers and wouldn't say where Texas ranked on his list, because he said he had no list and no plans to begin narrowing his favorite schools.

But Hines said he'd be back to visit Texas again.

"I'm definitely high on Texas - definitely high on Texas," Hines said.

Hines seemed to enjoy being the first recruit at Junior Day to get a one-on-one meeting with Charlie Strong.

"It's always great to talk to Coach Strong," Hines said. "Today was great. Everyone was welcoming with open arms."
