2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

Defensive Backs Board: Tom Herman’s defense covets speed and fluidity on the back end. As such, don’t be surprised if some current “cornerbacks†are moved to inside corner or safety. Texas is looking to take a couple corners in this class. Here a few guys, I’m told, are on the list:
Chevin Calloway: Texas went by to visit Calloway last week. Calloway isn’t the biggest cornerback but again I’m told Jason Washington puts a premium on speed and fluidity over size. I don’t have a strong sense of where Texas currently stands with Calloway. I know Calloway was very interested in Texas under Strong but was very concerned about stability.
Kary Vincent: Texas did visit the talented LSU CB commit out of Port Arthur. But based on my conversations with folks close to Vincent this one sounds like a long shot and I’m told the staff knows that.
Kendall Sheffield: I’m told that Texas tried to push for a visit with JUCO CB and former Alabama corner, Kendall Sheffield but it didn’t work out. Sheffield will end up elsewhere.
Tre Brown: Jason Washington was in Tulsa on Wednesday visiting 2017 OU CB commit, Tre Brown. I spoke with Brown and he said he’s been speaking to the Texas staff quite a bit since the visit but an offer has not come yet. I spoke with a source close to the program who tells me that Brown is high on the list.
Jav Guidry: Javelin Guidry is a recent move in to Murrieta, CA via Cedar Park, TX. Guidry is a former Houston commit. He is also the reigning 5A TX 100m state champion (10.41 s). I am told that the Texas staff has recently reached out to Guidry. The question is whether he would still have interest in returning to Texas. Guidry isn’t the biggest cornerback but you won’t find many that are as technically sound (he’s the son of a former UCLA CB) or as fast. I’ve personally seen Guidry on multiple occasions and he is glove.
Timarcus Davis: Davis is an explosive Houston CB commit who is also on the list but has not yet received an offer from Texas. I’ve written about Davis on here in the past and always believe Strong should have recruited him. Should Texas offer, he’d be a great pick up in my opinion.
Ceedee Lamb: Yesterday Texas offered 2017 WR and Sooners commit, Ceedee Lamb.

If Orlando is indeed the DC then I'm hoping after Wilson sees it and talks to current players that he will take an OV here and set up an in-home visit and Orlando and Herman can show him what they were able to do with last year's 5* DT from Texas.

Warren is injury prone and coming off an injury, Johnson coming off a two season layoff due to injury, Porter still has much to prove, and it has been reported that Houston is transferring and he was a non factor before that decision.
No doubt there is risk with those 3 - BUT the upside case is bright:
Warren is a BEAST
Porter is very quick
Johnson is an all around complete athlete who ran well with the carries he has received.
If all three healthy can make for a potent backfield next year

2/3 guys mentioned haven't had an entire healthy season since they arrived in Austin. I'm not gambling on them stay healthy until they prove they can do it.
And I'm of the opinion that Warren is not even close to the back Foreman was. If I'm Tom Herman I'm making sure I have contingency plans in place.

Duke Catalon had about 40 receptions out of the backfield for UH this season. Besides Kirk J. , do we have a tail back that can be a viable pass catching threat ?

Bill Polian was talking on ESPN about when he was the GM for the Colts even though they had gronkowski listed as a first round talent they didn't draft him because of his bad back.
Polian said that the most important ability for a player is availability and Warren and Johnson so far has not shown that ability.
