2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

I would not be surprised if Wheeler picks OU or Texas today. I thought this was OU all the way a couple days ago, not so much now.
He has been on the ou campus alot but never took an OV there.  He's also been to Austin multiple times (but never an OV).

The CB trended ou for quite awhile (apparently based off the opinion of one ou guru early on), then Texas popped up for awhile.  But the last few have swung back to ou.  Also, Wheeler is close to ou LB and former Skyline standout Frank Shannon.

Wheeler told Jeff Howe "“I think Oklahoma's defense is a little faster than Texas' and they can get down on the ball a little better, but I think Texas has a more physical defense.  They play a little harder than OU at times and it seems like that makes them a little more competitive.â€

So, it's a tough read.  Horn-commit Elliott, who has been with Wheeler the past week, thinks he's Texas.  We will find out soon enough.

Someone else may be better than me at this but I use the 25 for this class + the six early entries for 31 total.

Plus, we have one grayshirt.

Attrition has been and will likely continue to be a factor in the overall schollie max, but I think we are still looking at 31 (+1 gray) for this class.
There is also a max of 50 over two recruiting years.  There were 19 scholarships given for 2014, so we have a total of 31 spots left - attrition or not.

We need attrition so that we stay under the 85 scholarship limit.

It's interesting. Almost everyone in the recruiting industry is picking OU but almost everything Wheeler says/does screams Texas. Like I said earlier in this thread, it reminds me a lot of the Malik recruitment. The OU guys published a story that Wheeler was a big lean to OU and it seems like the entire 247 crew ran with it (247 did the same thing with Malik after Hamm wrote that he was essentially a silent commit to A&M). I've yet to see why people think Wheeler is going to OU. Maybe there's a reason but it all seems to hinge on a report from a while back.

If we get most of the names in that list above, the DB and LB depth we could have for the next couple years is incredible. A big plus for special teams also. Arguably the biggest NEED on that list is Mack. TE is a must, the DBs are a package (Boyd/Hill as well as 2016 Boyd), I would take the Florida guys to get that pipeline going...Im not sure who gets left out. WR would seem to be the position where you could take fewer. If Locksley REALLY wanted to come and thought this was his best place to play, could he pay his way in until a scholly opened up? I would think his dad has the $$ to do that. Probably not realistic. But the numbers are getting close. I wonder if we take the JUCOs if we knew the trend would turn this way?

Sorting through the DB situation --

With the addition of 4-star CB Davante Davis, we now have 3 DB commits (along with 3-star S DeShon Elliott and 3-star S Jamile Johnson

If we are lucky enough to add 4-star ATH Tim Irvin on Saturday, then we are at 4 DBs.  And we are finished at safety (Irvin can also be a dynamic PR/KR).

Assuming Irvin, then adding two more CBs would put us at 6 DBs total in this class.

The top two remaining CB targets for us appear to be 4-star Kris Boyd (just named us in his top 5) and 4-star Holton Hill (who has us in his top 3).
Closing out with those two would make this an outstanding class at positions of need and would put us in much better shape to compete in this conference of challenging offenses.  And might even be one of the all time Texas great DB classes.

Other possibles at CB are --
4-star Mark Fields (NorthCarolina) who just canceled his Texas OV but said we are still in the mix. He has long-standing close ties to one of our assistants.
3-star Sheldrick Redwine (Miami)(has OV set to Austin Jan 31)
3-star Deandre Baker (Miami)(current Georgia commit who has OV set to Austin Jan 23)

JUCOs ? Yes we must have JUCO OL (and they better be good ) or we go 6-6 or worse again next year no matter who is at QB, RB, WR, or on defense. Our OL is one of the worst in D1 football.

Here is some stuff on 6'3, 200 CB Davante Davis from Ryan Bartow (247 national analyst) who has seen Davis in person --

“He's all upside.  He's got great length and he can really flip his hips and run. He's a cornerback all the way. The best thing about him is his best stuff is ahead of him.â€

“He's a guy that in a perfect situation you'd redshirt next year and stash him away.  I wouldn't have high expectations for him in 2015, but by his third or fourth year he should be one of best players in your secondary.â€

2015 WR DeAndre McNeal on whether he would be affected by the departure of Les Koenning--
"Not at all.  Position coaches leave all the time. I can't let it affect the way I play the game of football. I just know now every current receiver has a clean slate and I know all I have to do is go in there and finesse and the best will play. Plus, de-committing is very big and one that also shows low character and that's not me."

2016 WR Collin Johnson on same -- (his father Johnnie Johnson was a teammate of Koenning's at Texas) --
“Coach Strong knows what he's doing. I'm going to miss Coach K though. That was my man.â€

2016 WR Reggie Hemphill on same -- (had built a pretty close relationship to Koenning)
“He was one of the reasons I committed.† But does it change the Manvel product’s commitment or feelings toward Texas?  â€œNa.â€

2015 WR John Burt on same --
“I'm completely shocked. That's something I have to consider.†(ps - Chris Vaughn is the primary recruiter for Burt going forward)

all per 247

We have two new JUCO OL on campus already.  Hodges is expected to compete for a starting spot.

Has he been talking to McNeal?

Cant have too many quality DBs playing Baylor, TCU and Tech every year. And now Kansas most likely

Yeah I realize our OL needs help. Just that ordinarily you would want to give a scholly to a 4 star HS kid instead of a 2 star JUCO but I understand thats where the program is right now. Was just wondering if there was buyers remorse with the guys considering UT now.

From whats been written - that 2-star JUCO tackle was a pet project for Wickline.  He apparently likes the kids potential and has size you can't teach.  I'm willing to give Wickline one scholarship a year if it keeps him happy.

OU rivals just tweeted, "#Sooners seem to be about to miss out on one of their key targets for this weekend. Who is it?"

Hmmm wonder if it's Wheeler?

I'm pretty much ready for Burt's recruitment to come to a close. I'm stunned that he's even still committed to Texas and I'd be even more shocked if he actually went through with playing at Texas. He's seemed to be Auburn bound for months now. It honestly just feels like it's leading up to a not so dramatic hat flip for him. Don't get me wrong, I wish the kid nothing but the best wherever he plays. He's a real talent. If it's going to be Auburn, pull your commitment to Texas so that Texas can move on with our targets. If it is Texas, lets ride.
