Some interesting tidbits from Elliott via Rivals -- he watched the Texas Bowl in Malik Jefferson's room with Jefferson, Daylon Mack, Kyler Murray, Damarkus Lodge and Christian Kirk.
On Mack -- "Everybody is trying to work on Daylon. You can't really read him that well."

His father favors Texas.
Mack -- "I think they had the number one defense in the Big 12 this year. So getting my friend (Malik Jefferson) and having the number one defense in the Big 12, with Charlie Strong being a first-year head coach at Texas, that's big to me.
"They just say playing early, playing great defense is a selling point. And coach Strong is a great leader for the team. He's a guy that's going to take care of you, but you're going to be disciplined too. I really feel like he has a lot of Urban Meyer in him. He's a good coach, but he disciplines his kids and takes care of them too.

Wickline and Vaughn visited Richmond in Memphis in Dec. Strong has a connection with Richmond's coach.
He had hoped for an offer from Texas going back to his junior year. Horns came into the picture a couple months ago.
Taking OVs to Bama, Ole Miss and Texas (Jan 30) in that order. Said distance will play a small factor in his final decision, but he's going to give both Texas and FSU a chance to win him over when he takes his visits

Texas currently has 22 players committed for the 2015 class (for the purposes of this post I am not including grey-shirt Matthew Merrick).
John Burt is a likely de-commit (especially after his comments regarding the Abomination Bowl)
Assuming Burt does de-commit this gives Texas 10 available scholarships for the 2015 class
The following players are all still realistically in play for Texas:
Anthony Wheeler (choosing between OU and Texas today)
Tim Irvin (choosing between Auburn and Texas on Sat)
Devonaire Clarington (choosing between MIA, FLA, and Texas on Sat)
Kris Boyd (Texas lean but still taking OV's)
Chris Warren (Won't announce until all OV's are completed - Texas reported as leader in clubhouse)
Nick Brossette (LSU commit who has been very impressive at UA. Rumors are that we're going to flip him)
Ryan Newsome (Seemingly a Texas lean, but don't count out Tennessee. Don't know if Charlie is holding a spot for him or not)
Daylon Mack (Chavis hire might take him back to AtM, but also is very high on TCU. Cancelled his OV to LSU)
Holton Hill (reportedly he and Boyd want to play together - Texas is the only overlapping school on their lists)
Carlos Strickland (Texas Tech commit who is looking to take an OV to Texas - teammate of Anthony Wheeler)

After the Arkansas disaster it was reported that Strong and Watson both said that we would be taking another QB. There is a lot of chatter that the other QB will be a prospect currently committed to an ACC school and whose dad has a long-time relationship with Strong.
Assuming this is a lock - that makes 12 players for 10 spots.
I think Mack is a bit of a long shot, and Strickland might not be realistic either so the remaining 10 names on this list might be how Strong finishes out this recruiting cycle.
Adding Wheeler, Irvin, Clarington, Boyd, Warren, Brossette, Newsome, Hill, Johnson, QB would give Strong and Texas a top 7 recruiting class.

I watched the interview with Burt and believe that he is being truthful at 50-50. Says he is committed but recruittment is open. It seems an honest comment, but don't see how you can save a spot if he is undecided-spots are too tight. At some point, contrary to what 18 year olds think, it is not all about them.
A few things from Higdon, who has been more accurate lately than most of the gurus (for ex, he called Malik and the Florida kids early)

Jesus - thats a lot of things going right for Strong and Texas. Strickland, Mack, and Wheeler would be incredible, but I wonder who gets left out? Oh lord, Mack scheduling an OV for AtM after Texas, and then never showing up would be the ultimate troll job.
No surprise on Swoopes - I expect he'll be sitting in meetings with Clarington from now on.
Locksley would be a nice get from a 'he's more ready to play' perspective - but I wonder how much that is worth compared to losing someone like Newsome?
Who the hell else could be a 'big surprise'. Wonder if its an OOS 5star? Dare to dream.

Speaking of Clarington, I ran across a few things on him--
He played with Tim Irvin his junior season at Westminster Christian, before switching schools (again). But that's when those two became close friends.
Their coach at Westminster Christian was Irvin's uncle (no, not that uncle). Sedrick irvin played at MSU and in the NFL for a few years. He thinks Clarington has the potential to make it to the league too and even drew a comparison to Gronkowski. He said Clarington has "great hand-eye coordination, soft hands and huge upside."

A quick question.
I keep seeing the number that we can sign as 31. Does attrition factor in this in any way? For example, if the staff knows that 3 current players (I picked that number out of thin air) are going to transfer or give up football can they now sign 34? And I know that early enrollees factor in all this but not exactly sure how.

Some Jeff Howe comments on Wheeler --
DeShon Elliott and Malik Jefferson both worked on him the week of practices. Wheeler told Howe ("while smiling") that he could see himself playing alongside Jefferson -- “[Jefferson] said [the Longhorns] have a bright future and with our class we can go in and change things."
Howe added that "one of the recruits from the Lone Star State in Orlando told me they felt Wheeler would pick Texas" but that it is not a done deal yet.

I would not be surprised if Wheeler picks OU or Texas today. I thought this was OU all the way a couple days ago, not so much now.
Someone else may be better than me at this but I use the 25 for this class + the six early entries for 31 total.
Plus, we have one grayshirt.
Attrition has been and will likely continue to be a factor in the overall schollie max, but I think we are still looking at 31 (+1 gray) for this class.
