You are the man!  Thank you for referencing the 83 defense.  Best defense I have ever seen at the college level!  “83Dee” is a reference to that defense.  The 84 Cotton Bowl was the worst I have ever hurt due to watching a sporting event.

I actually agree that it was time for Akers and Mack to go... but that doesn’t mean they weren’t great coaches prior.   This can happen to the best of coaches (Tom Laundry).  “Perhaps unfair” really meant that past performance perhaps should have bought them more time.  But ultimately I agree with you.
That was a great defense and I believe that if Edwin Simmons had stayed healthy then UT would have won a NC.

Agree.  I’ll raise you; they would have won the national championship if they would have allowed a give-up punt to hit the ground and roll.

hell....I believe if our punt returner had just run off the field and let the punt bounce around we would have won the title....no question.

As a retired State agency employee in a management position, I can guarantee that termination would most likely occur to anyone that spoke that way.
I've worked for the state at MD Anderson for 15 years and couldn't agree with you more!  It's notoriously hard to terminate state employees once they've made it past their probation period, it doesn't matter how well/poor they do their job, if they're consistently late or if they're on the internet all day instead of working*...as long as they show up and occupy a desk they're going to have a job.  While it's extremely hard to get rid of someone for any of those reasons, we take classes on employment laws and cultural diversity every year as part of our institutional mandatory training and it's made very clear that there are severe consequences for comments just like that.  Comments like Earl's are one of the few things that will get you shown the door before you have a chance to clean out your desk.  If Earl wasn't Earl he'd have had a quick meeting with HR and then would've been escorted out by security...I've seen it before and, unfortunately, am sure that I will again.

I agree with everything you just said. You left off one major point was Mackovic's lousy personality. His famous line about UT fans need to accept the good along with bad got my blood boiling. In other words since we won the Big 12 the year before, we need to accept a 66-3 loss to UCLA.

It didn't take long for Arizona to figure out that he was a bad hire and didn't last even three seasons.
I started the UCLA game sitting 10 rows up on the 50 yard-line and finished it in a bar yelling "Mackovic Sucks!!!" with a hundred or so Longhorns.  I'd tell you which bar but that was in my wilder days and all I remember is that they had a lot of beer...

Too bad I wasn't at the bar, I would have fit right in. I was at home and I was saying suck Mackovic  except with a F instead of a S.

What was really frustrating was during the off season Mackovic was told to hire the best DC he could. Instead he hires Bobby Jack Wright who was on the offensive staff.

Here's an article from Scipio Tex about the game.

I would think that fundamentals and a lack of confidence is a coaching issue.  Orlando has four games to fix fundamentals and build confidence.  I would think this is a good to time to panic.

Orlando cited fundamentals and a lack of confidence as the main issues with his group right now, something he believes no scheme change is going to fix.

I had a class with Edwin Simmons. He rarely showed for the class but his Angel showed up every class (? wow!). It was a small class and after 2/3 of the semester was over, the professor stopped in the middle of the lecture and asked the Angel "Who are you?". I think he realized she wasn't on the roll. Edwin did show up for the final. After about 10 minutes he just blurted out "Hey man! Can we make a deal?".

We're one more loss this season from it being 10 straight seasons with at least 4 losses...

We might be the most overrated and underachieving program in the country.
