Duncanville coach describes 91-1 win over Grand Prairie as 'no-win situation'
The Duncanville girls basketball team has lost only one game over the last two seasons, but on Tuesday night, the Pantherettes were in a "no-win situation."
That's how Duncanville coach Cathy Self-Morgan described the 91-1 victory over Grand Prairie.
"We played our regular game for three minutes, and then we put in the subs and sat back in a two-three zone," the coach said. "And we never play that."
Duncanville (16-1) is a nationally ranked team that earlier this year won its third state title in the last five seasons. Grand Prairie (1-13) has lost six games by more than 40 points, and it plays in District 7-6A with Duncanville.
Grand Prairie's head basketball coach and Grand Prairie ISD athletic director Troy Mathieu did not respond to attempts to contact them.
Self-Morgan had her players switch to a zone defense to try to keep the score down, but by the end of the first quarter, it was 44-0. Twelve Pantherettes scored in the game, and no player had more than 13 points.
Duncanville shot 80 percent from the field in the game and had only one turnover. It was an unfortunate "perfect storm," Self-Morgan said.
"I could tell them to just throw the ball around the outside, but that almost seems worse for the other team," Self-Morgan said. "I didn't know what else we could do."
Grand Prairie coach Jill Davis didn't respond to requests for comment.
