Rumph gone?

This is why kids should never choose a school because of their position coach, OC, or DC......Even the head coach for that matter....Neither may be there when they arrive or before they leave.

So why even offer Hurtt? It completely flies in the face of the values and would cause Charlie to pull strings he may not like using right now. On top of that he may not even be able to come here. Is he the coach CS wanted to bring from the beginning and was told no by the BOR?

I amended my philosophy up above with a fact. Facts more interesting than thinking.

This twitter account is Lampkin.

What does this mean exactly?

Hurtt isn't allowed to begin recruiting until October of this year?
No, doesn't mean that.

I'll share below what I found re: show-cause penalty, but Clint Hurtt was Charlie's recruiting coordinator and DL coach at Louisville before being hit with the show-cause penalty for his time at Miami.

Hurtt was recognized by ESPN.com as the National Recruiter of the Year in 2011. Clint Hurtt is currently the assistant DL coach for the Chicago Bears.

Chicago Bears Bio
"This will be Hurtt's second season with the team after spending 2014 as the Bears assistant defensive line coach.
In 2014, the Bears increased their sack total to 39, up from 31 a year prior to Hurtt's arrival. Thirty-five of the Bears 39 sacks (89.7 percent) came from defensive linemen in 2014 up from 21-of-31 (67.7) in 2013."

Apparently, Clint Hurtt is a helluva recruiter and DL coach.
Essentially… from what I deciphered from the info below, Texas can hire Hurtt. He can coach and recruit. Also, the school and coach are required to send letters to the NCAA agreeing to abide by any restrictions imposed (see restrictions below)  and report back to the NCAA every 6 months until the end of employment or the show-cause, whichever comes first. Restrictions are over October, 2015.

From this article I found the following:

"By its definition, a show-cause penalty is:

an order saying that for a set period of time, any NCAA penalties imposed on a coach involved in major rules violations at a university’s athletic program will remain in force if he is hired by any other NCAA member institution. Both the school and coach are required to send letters to the NCAA agreeing to abide by any restrictions imposed, and report back to the NCAA every 6 months until the end of employment or the show-cause, whichever comes first. If the school wishes to avoid the NCAA restrictions imposed on that individual, it must appear before the NCAA Committee on Infractions and “show cause†as to why it should not be penalized for hiring him.[1] The penalty is intended to follow a coach for violations that he had a role in committing. It is the most severe penalty that can be handed down to a coach.

Contrary to popular belief, an NCAA member school is allowed to hire a coach with a show-cause order outstanding. In practice, however, the show-cause restrictions make it prohibitively difficult for a coach with a show-cause order to get another collegiate job. As mentioned above, any school that hires a coach with a show-cause order in effect can be penalized merely for doing so. Additionally, that school can face severe penalties if a coach commits another violation during the length of the penalty.[2] Consequently, most schools will not even consider hiring a coach with a show-cause penalty in effect. For this reason, a show-cause penalty usually has the effect of blackballing a coach from the collegiate ranks for the duration of the penalty. Many coaches who are given such a penalty never coach again, even after the expiration of the penalty.â€

The NCAA’s list of infractions has been released and here’s what we now know about Hurtt and what would happen should Louisville decide to keep him (Note – institution C is Louisville and coach B is Clint Hurtt):

University of Miami
Public Infractions Report
October 22, 2013
e.
Implementation of an additional recruiting ban in effect from the date of this decision through June 9, 2014. Former assistant football coach B will be prohibited from any recruiting activity during the remainder of the fall 2013 and spring 2014.
f.
Two-year freeze on compensation. Former assistant football coach B will not be eligible and will not receive performance raises or bonuses from May 20, 2013,through May 20, 2015.
g.
Required attendance at NCAA Regional Rules Seminars in 2014 and 2015 at his own cost, as determined by Institution C.
h.
A “zero tolerance†policy on any violations, including secondary violations, involving former assistant football coach B during his 2013-14 and 2014-15 contract years."

Very interesting, Bill, thanks for sharing.

I'd be surprised if UT's offer is more than what Hurtt is being compensated by the Bears. I guess it comes down to this - does Hurtt like coaching CFB more than the pros? If so, then CFS should be able to persuade him to come on board.

I feel your pain brother Horn. I'm old school - don't twitter either and won't. It was hard for me to keep up with recruiting this season so I relied on all these HS wizards to do it for me so I could follow most of it....

Hang with US, but don't carve your name on the ceiling beam "Brasky was here" as was previously posted ;)
Heard through the grapevine Brasky gave notice at the Food Way.

If Clint Hurtt is indeed Strong's choice to replace Rumph, it's certainly an interesting choice.  On the plus side, Hurtt's a very good DL coach and a first class recruiter.  The problem is his involvement in the Miami mess of a few years ago and that show cause that he's stuck with until October.  Hurtt did coach for Strong at Louisville, and he kept his nose clean there, so I have to think Strong's confident that Hurtt wouldn't try any funny stuff at UT.  I also wonder if Strong believes Hurtt can get out of that show cause early, because I don't see him wanting somebody that can't hit the recruiting trail until October.  Hurtt's got strong enough ties to Florida that UT probably wouldn't be hurt by Rumph's defection.  Bottom line?  If Strong trusts Hurtt and wants him, and if Hurtt can get out from under the show cause, then hire him.  At least, I don't think Hurtt would be bailing out on Strong after a year, and leaving a bunch of freshly-signed players in the lurch.

This recruiting season has made me feel like I can't keep up.

I guess I'm too old for that sort of nonsense any more. I don't like Twitter. I'm tired of being afraid all the time. I've decided not to stay. I doubt y'all will kick up any fuss. Not for an erratic poster like me. P.S: Tell Carrera I'm sorry I was texting him about Daylon Mack. No hard feelings. Brasky.
Get Busy living or get busy dying.

Good luck at Florida Rumph. I think he's a good coach but I actually expected a little more out of him in terms of recruiting (granted it was only 1 year at Texas). The weird thing about the staff is the two guys I didn't expect to be great recruiters are our best two recruiters in Brian Jean Mary and Chris Vaughn.

I also trust Strong, but I don't think Hurrt fits this core values. How do you preach core values and then hire him. Seems a bit hippo critical

Hurtt's recruiting suspension only lasted through the spring of 2014. He's free to start recruiting immediately if he took the job at Texas.

He hired him at Louisville.  Hurtt has been clean since, kept on a zero tolerance leash and has performed well.  I'll leave it to Charlie on this one, it's his job on the line with this or any hire.

Hurrt may have sinned regarding Miami, but he subsequently worked with Strong at Louisville, where Strong

got to know him and about him. Supposedly, Strong is interested in bringing Hurrt to Texas. I don't think Strong

would want to bring a coach to UT who conflicts with his core values. Charlie is "in the know" as to all these

things. Like you, I trust Strong. I really do.

Hurtt made a mistake, a pretty big one.  When does the statute of limitation run out on it.  He did what he was supposed to when he worked for Strong in Louisville, and he stayed out of trouble.  He got rejected for a hire when Strong was first brought to Austin, and went about his life, going to work for the Bears.  Strong knows his butt's on the line with this hire, so he must feel pretty strongly that Hurtt would keep his nose clean if he went to work for UT.  I guess I'm old school enough to think that Strong, as the head coach, should within reason have the right to hire the coaches he thinks would be a good fit with what he's trying to do.  If Hurtt is advised that there is no squirm room for any kind of an NCAA violation and he heeds that advice, he's earned a second chance to prove he learned from his mistake.

Me too.

As I mentioned above, Hurtt was recognized by ESPN.com as the National Recruiter of the Year in 2011.

Plus, in his first year as the assistant DL coach for the Chicago Bears, he helped increase the DL sack total 67% (21 to 35). As we know, the Pros are results driven... if you don't produce, you're gone.

Let's see...

  • National recruiter of the year that can start recruiting Day 1
  • Proven Pro DL coach
  • Only real restriction is zero tolerance that I'm confident Charlie has anyway
  • Charlie has already worked with him and in fact kept him on the Louisville staff, even after the show cause penalty that reveals Charlie's and the Louisville administration's high opinion of him
If we land Hurtt, or better... I'm pleased.

My first impulse is to say HELL NO on any coach who's been caught cheating. However, CS knows just how serious UT is about that sort of thing and that if this guy tries any foolishness, it won't just be the DL coach ridden out of town on a rail.

Hurtt did not serve out the term of his show-cause. He left for the Bears in January 2014.

Good luck to Rumph.

Its kind of funny though.  When a recruit spins the media and fans on a daily basis with tweets, OV's, etc its "Let the kid have his fun"  When a coach makes a move for his family back to his origins its "What the hell man?"

But to be fair Charles and Lampkin were committed along, unlike other media whores like Mack.
